About Amber Lawrence

Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology at UC San Diego, I have a passion for understanding the complexities of the brain and expanding knowledge in the field. My hands-on experience spans various prestigious labs as well as the biotech industry, where I’ve honed my skills in immunohistochemistry, neuronal electrophysiology, and data management. My diverse experiences in research and community engagement have equipped me with strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills. With a strong foundation in neuroscience, I aim to pursue a PhD focused on neurodegenerative diseases, where I hope to contribute to groundbreaking research and develop innovative treatments.

    My research in the Dore Lab utilizes single-cell patch and field electrophysiology, as well as fluorescent microscopy techniques. Utilizing electrophysiology I measure differences in LTD (long term depression) by measuring fEPSP (field excitatory postsynaptic potentials). I employ these techniques to understand how NMDA receptor co-agonists impact synaptic plasticity in Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, I am working on a project regarding new methods of identifying dendritic spikes in hippocampal neurons.

The goal of my research is to understand how inducing autophagy in cells affected with Parkinson’s affects cellular survival, activation, and activity. I investigated how microbiota relates to Parkinson’s disease through protein quantification for tissue lysates and cytokines, data collection and in vitro studies. This was done with the goal of identifying possible treatments or cures for Parkinson’s disease.
