REM:- Part of the Remote Electronic Monitoring policy team at Defra. - Working towards greater confidence about the sustainability of our fish.- I contribute to various aspects of the REM programme including programme governance, data and interoperability.Bycatch:- I also support on Defra's bycatch policy mapping and implementation.

I supported the Climate Change Insights team with research into UK climate change data and resources, and data synthesis and analysis. I assisted with writing a quarterly article and provided general administrative help such as organising data sets and repositories. Liaising with key stakeholders and other government departments was vital to this role to ensure accuracy and relevancy of the article content.

I reviewed research outputs and data ingests for the Secure Research Service to check they adhered to ONS de-identification policies, as well as Data Owner agreements. Reviewing included ‘reverse engineering' data and statistical analysis methods to de-identify the data, therefore an understanding of complex data sets and statistical methodology was crucial. I was responsible for maintaining a daily tracker of reviews and outputs and I regularly communicated with researchers and stakeholders via email and phone.

My role as front of house advisor for the MyPort Hub in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences included responding to queries from students, staff, and other stakeholders with relevant information by email, phone and in person. I would assist with various administrative tasks like data entry and provide support for other departments for crucial time-sensitive events. This was a fast-paced role that vastly developed my communication skills and provided me with valuable knowledge and experience working with students in a professional Higher Education setting.

- I co-led and implemented a coral reef monitoring programme for a research organisation. - I was responsible for survey data collection via SCUBA and snorkel, and analysis of fish and benthic communities using StereoVideo, transects and 3D mapping. - I managed and supervised volunteers with in-water activities and subsequent data analysis. Data was provided in the form of reports to the Indonesian management authorities. - I gave regular presentations and talks at the research site about the monitoring program and the data collected on the reefs.

Eilat, Israel

- I assisted on research projects with master’s students, PhD students, academic staffand researchers for 4 weeks at the Inter-University Institute for Marine Sciences, assessing the response of Red Sea corals to impacts such as metal pollution. - I supervised PAM fluorometry and coral physiology assessments such as tissue removal and analysis. - I collected coral samples in the underwater nursery and monitored them in the Red Sea Simulator aquarium tanks. - I attended numerous presentations and talks from researchers on other studies being conducted in the Red Sea.- A report about the research industry, a presentation and a vodcast were also required from this internship as part of my course.

I led guided tours of the university to prospective students and other visitors, helping to promote the university and the BSc Marine Biology and Biological Sciences courses. I was required to give sufficient information and answer queries about the department and courses, as well as general university life. I developed my communication skills and remained confident speaking in front of groups of visitors of all ages. Timekeeping and organisational skills were also key aspects for keeping to a tight schedule across the tour days.

I was a research assistant on several projects including a PhD study investigating phytoplankton responses to temperature change. I used methods such as cell isolation, and culture manipulation to identify and grow phytoplankton cells and species. I monitored cultures on a temperature gradient in tanks and a used multimode plate reader for cell imaging. This role helped my to develop my lab skills in a more professional and research focused environment.

I was a research assistant for projects assessing co-evolutionary responses of fish populations to anthropogenic stressors such as harvesting, acidification and resource changes. I measured population growth and dynamics, and manipulated feeding assays to investigate predator-prey relationship. Aquaria monitoring and maintenance were a key part of this role. This research placement resulted in a co-authorship on a published scientific paper George et al. 2019 in Ecology and Evolution.
