The Madhya Pradesh Rural Livelihoods Project (MPRLP) was operational in nine predominantly tribal districts (covering 3000 villages) of the state of Madhya Pradesh. The project aimed at protecting and augmenting livelihoods of the poor and vulnerable tribal populations and specially women. The project focused on strengthening of Gram Sabha as local self governance institution so as to strengthen the capacity of to plan and manage resources, to ensure equitable distribution of funds, and to protect and promote the interests of the poor and vulnerable, paying particular attention to access to resources, information and services.Project enhanced poor people’s livelihoods through a two-track strategy.First, strengthened the resource base. This means improving management of land, water and forest resources on which poor people depend through integrated watershed management and community forest management. Then, stimulated micro-enterprises based on these resources that provided employment and incomes for the rural poor.

UNIDO started a cluster development programme in the state of Orissa as part of the DFID (Department of International Development of the UK) funded programme “Enabling Pro-Poor Economic Growth in Orissa”. This helped generate commitment among policy makers to the cluster development approach having a significant impact on poverty reduction.The objective of the UNIDO intervention was to support cluster development in a sector where the incidence of poverty is among the highest in the state, identify good practices for cluster development, and transfer them to relevant institutions for replication in other NTFP clusters.
