As a Cochlear Implant Consumer Specialist (CICS) with AB, a Sonova Company, I provide support to hearing healthcare professionals, potential cochlear implant candidates, and AB recipients in Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska, western Iowa and southwestern Missouri. As CICS and bilateral Advanced Bionics recipient with a background as a deaf educator and early interventionist, I am uniquely qualified to help hearing health care professionals with patients who have severe or profound hearing loss by:-Providing informational and educational materials for HCP offices and professionals-Helping to identify potential CI candidates based on current criteria.-Connecting with potential CI candidates to share experiences of myself and other AB recipients, to answer any questions about CI technology, the candidacy process, or what life is like with a cochlear implant.-Providing support to CI candidates throughout their candidacy journey.

-Provided education, support and resources to families after their child has been identified with a hearing loss.-Informed families on available services in Mississippi and communication options for children with hearing loss within Mississippi.-Coached families on auditory verbal strategies and techniques in the clinic setting in order to facilitate their child’s listening and spoken language development.-Coached families to maximize the child’s listening skills using their residual hearing and with amplification devices.-Coordinated monthly pediatric cochlear implant team meetings and complete Cochlear Implant Profile (ChIP) for each candidate. -Counseled pediatric cochlear implant candidates and their families on the cochlear implant candidacy process.-Consulted with daycares and schools on accommodations and modifications for children with hearing loss.-Empowered families to follow up after their baby refers on the newborn hearing screening.-Contacted and assisted families lost to follow up on audiology appointments. -Assisted audiologists in hearing assessments for young children with hearing loss.-Collaborated with speech-language pathologists in assessing speech and language development of young children with hearing loss.

-Observed and assisted in auditory-verbal sessions and home visits led by graduate students.-Provided feedback and mentored graduate students.-Presented on topics related to early intervention, assessments, auditory-verbal strategies, and professionalism.

-Coached families on auditory verbal strategies and techniques to help facilitate their child’s listening and spoken language development in the natural environment. -Coached families to maximize the child’s listening skills using their residual hearing and with amplification devices. -Assisted families in monitoring and troubleshooting amplification devices. -Provided emotional support and parent-to-parent networking. -Collaborated with families and their First Steps service coordinators in order to develop and implement the child’s Individualized Family Service Plan goals. -Completed observations and provided inservices at child’s daycare/preschool.

-Designed and implemented developmentally appropriate large and small group lessons in an auditory-oral Pre-Kindergarten classroom. -Designed and implemented Individual Educational Programs. -Incorporated and fostered listening and language through all aspects of the day. -Performed daily listening and equipment check. -Coached and advised parents on fostering language and listening skills at home. -Utilized a variety of instructional methods to meet the individual needs of children.
