For the last 16 years, I have worked in the not-for-profit world, honing creative, technical and interpersonal skills to shape messages that inform and connect with diverse audiences. From managing people and production deadlines to editing curriculum, writing technical documents and drafting film scripts, I’ve learned that empathy and respect are just as important to good writing as grammar and sentence structure. My experience working at one of the world’s leading international child development organizations has taught me that dignity and humility are of utmost importance in creating connection. And connection is how we move forward and find solutions. If the language in our communications does not elevate the value of people and partnership, progress is at risk. I believe language is powerful. Words are not static or weightless. Sure, they can be dry or dull, but they ALWAYS have potential. Words are how we express emotion… and provoke it. We speak them, write them, and hold them in our thoughts. Words are part of us. We choose them to define ourselves, our organizations, our ideas. And the nuance of our choices determines the connections we make.
