· Research Technician for clinical trial TACERA (Towards A Cure for Early Rheumatoid Arthritis), based over seven different sites around the UK. · Separation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells and characterization and purity checks via flow cytometry. Subsets were sent to various sites over the UK for further analysis, samples logged using LIMS database.· NMR metabolomics of patients’ urines, including sample preparation and analysis.· Experience staining tissue for use with confocal microscopy and growing cell culture lines.· Overhauling existing and implementing new health and safety protocols, overseeing COSHH forms, risk assessments and chemical safety for 30 lab members.

Management of reports produced for clientele based on results of water and air testing for certain cultures such as Legionnaires disease, E. Coli and pseudomonad species.

During an 11 week voluntary research placement I gained work experience looking at optimising matrix crystal homogeneity and use of additives for use in imaging and characterisation of lipids in rat and mice brains via MALDI MS. I focused on using four difference matrices, including CHCA, DHB, THAP and Sinapinic acid. Changes in lipid concentration and / or localisation have been indicated by MS techniques in diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, atherosclerosis and liver disease. Many different lipid species are implicated in these disorders; hence improved understanding of the normal presence and distribution of lipids in biological samples is key to the development of treatments for many diseases. My supervisor was Dr Josephine Bunch.
