Managing Developmental Editor

Washington, District Of Columbia, Us

I facilitated planning updates to ASM Press’s flagship reference publications, in both traditional print and in a new online searchable form that launched in 2020.

Sep 2019 - Sep 2020

Editorial Director

Fairfax, Virginia, Us

I directed the editorial activities of EyeWorld, the news service of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), a professional society for ophthalmologists who specialize in anterior segment surgery. EyeWorld activities include all aspects of planning and producing the monthly magazine, regular science reporting, meeting coverage and onsite interviews, weekly news roundups, and more. In addition to those activities, I liaised with the editorial board, freelancers, public relations representatives, and others. While maintaining the monthly magazine, I lead the internal team in a redesign which was completed in less than a year, in time for the society's annual meeting in May 2019.EyeWorld has received awards from the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) for its trade show coverage, cover photography, and writing. The publication's digital version was also recognized in min's Best of Web Awards.

Jan 2019 - Sep 2019

Editor

Fairfax, Virginia, Us

I planned, solicited, edited, and tracked the editorial activities of EyeWorld, the monthly news magazine of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), a professional society for ophthalmologists who specialize in anterior segment surgery. The monthly magazine ranged from 64 to 224 pages, with a print distribution of approximately 25,000. I supervised two staff writers and 6-8 regular freelance writers, and was the primary liaison for editorial board. In addition, I worked with the society committees, ASCRS staff, physician contributors, and communications professionals representing companies interested in editorial opportunities. I worked closely with the EyeWorld team on the magazine plus other publications and communications related to other EyeWorld activities, such as regular email communications, supplements, and the onsite daily paper at the annual meeting.

Oct 2015 - Dec 2018

Managing Editor, Anthropology News

Arlington, Va, Us

I managed all aspects of Anthropology News (AN), the official news source of the American Anthropological Association. AN is an ambitious publication, with two arms: (1) a print newspaper for members, and (2) a website for anthropologists, future anthropologists, and anthropology-curious readers. I coordinated with over 60 regular contributing editors and columnists, and additional authors every month who contribute commentaries, reports, analyses, and more.In addition to the editing and production of this member benefit, I spearheaded the creation of the award-winning web version of the newspaper at anthropology-news.org in 2011. With the launch of the website, I also flipped the publishing schedule to be online-first. This reduced the print issue to a more cost-effective bimonthly production cycle, while also highlighting reader-selected articles from the website. Around this time I also launched the publication's Twitter feed, which grew to about 9,000 followers by the time I passed the torch along in September 2015. I worked closely with other staff members to ensure AN content was accurate and timely. In particular, the digital editorial assistant, whom I supervised, was an integral part of keeping the website humming while I coordinated with staff, members, editors, and vendors.

Sep 2010 - Sep 2015

Production Editor, Anthropology News

I handled the typesetting and production of the print issue, as well as photographic management. I also produced monthly e-newsletters and archived each issue online.
