About Amy Jacobs

Very rarely does one have the opportunity to find his or her calling so early in life. I am fortunate enough to have found mine in the education field. For the past fifteen years, I have been teaching English classes in a college setting. Throughout this time, I have had the opportunity to continue to master my craft through skill development such as student interaction, lesson preparation, technology in the classroom, oral and written communications, and other skills necessary for student success. I am always interested in new classroom opportunities, which allow me to grow as an instructor, professor, or whatever other title should be attached to my job. For the past two years, I have had the honor of teaching Literary Foundations: Genre for Grand Valley State University. In building my unique curriculum, I focus the course content on horror as the foundational anchor for all other information to follow; this information includes instruction on literary genres, popular genres, and genre mediums. After twelve years of study and scholarship in horror studies, I can now pass the wealth of knowledge I gained in that time on to the students I encounter and also share my (emphatically enthusiastic) passion for the genre that does not receive the attention and study worthy of the wealth of its content. In May 2024, I returned to the classroom as a graduate student once again in the field of Library and Information Sciences. In choosing to focus my degree pathway in Archival Administration, I hope to ensure I do all within my control to one day achieve my dreams: to serve in the role of horror studies collection coordinator in a repository aligned with the revolutionary and first-of-its-kind George A. Romero Horror Studies Center created through partnership between the University of Pittsburgh and the George A. Romero Foundation. As of October 2024, I am on track to finish my MS-LIS with a focus in Archival Administration in August 2025. Following the completion of my MS-LIS, I hope to gain admission to Michigan State University's PhD program, to study popular culture with a focus in film studies. I am currently working on research related to Rob Zombie's Firefly Family trilogy and the ways in which it functions as a 21st-century fairy tale that provides moral instruction on familial and communal relationships for a post-9/11 America. Further, I am a contracted freelance editor for Stormrook Entertainment, working with comics and fiction manuscripts. Whether I am acting as professor, student, editor, or day-to-day Amy, horror holds my heart.

    Professor of Genre. I teach ENG 215: Literary Foundations--Genre, and I build the curriculum based on foundations built on the horror genre. Current course texts for analysis categorized as "horror" include Batman: The Killing Joke (Alan Moore and Brian Bolland), Into the Forest and All the Way Through (Cynthia Pelayo), Get Out (Jordan Peele; film and annotated screenplay), and Maus I/II (Art Spiegelman). Students analyze each text through the lens of the horror genre, while over the course of the term combining horror with other content genres such as myth, memoir, crime, western, and detective/thriller. Further, in this role, I act as one of two representatives from the English department at GVSU's annual LakerCon, a comic convention dedicated to showcasing student work alongside (if not above!) working academics and professional scholars. This year, I facilitated and moderated a panel comprised of seven of my genre students from across the three sections I am teaching for Fall 2024; during the panel, students responded to questions related to Batman: The Killing Joke and its ties to the horror genre, its importance as a horror text, and other related considerations. In this capacity, I am now working with several students to workshop their own writings to prepare them for publication readiness at the undergraduate level.
