I taught 7 higher math classes, 25-30 students/each. Classroom management; student evaluation; developing curriculum and lesson plans; using online grading & student information systems (SIS).Highlight: I’m proud that I was rated as “Highly Effective” teacher every year.I’ve also sought out additional experience, & training in: leadership and online instruction, both areas where I want to grow and excel (through books, classes, & directly working with software).Online & Instructional Design:I’ve used an LMS for my classes for 6 years. I have also loved mentoring colleagues (in my department & district-wide) to use it (Canvas) and our SIS. I learned to create assignments, assessments, interactive videos, & even a touch of html to create a more dynamic & engaging online presence in my classes.1 cool outcome: student scores increased by 6-9% (almost a letter grade) due to recreating lessons to use technology at home (83% of student surveys indicated they preferred). I also worked hard to and dramatically improved my time management during my tenure here. One key help doing this: utilizing all available resources, including technology, & the expertise of my colleagues.Data/Analysis Projects: One example of using my tech skills to be as efficient in my work as possible: I used the data in our SIS, integrated with other software, to create “personalized” form letters to send to parents, which easily saved 10-15 hours over manually sending emails. Principal said, “That is the best parent communication I have seen!” What I learned: My biggest lesson personally was to hear criticism without it adversely affecting me. I learned to listen and consider input, and also, though, to respect myself. I now feel comfortable seeing myself as intelligent and competent, and worthy of the leadership roles I have taken on and sought.Leadership:During my three years on the team, my school earned “Golden Model School” status – the only high school in our district to do so.

What I learned: I had to learn to adapt – a lot – here, as my students needed special accommodations beyond what I thought I knew would work. BASICS: This was a small private school for students with learning disabilities Basically, I was the secondary math department. Leadership: My role as Department Head was to align the math curriculum with the Michigan State Standards.In this small environment, all of our roles were fluid, though. Workshops: After parents expressed concern that they did not know how to assist their child with some specific homework, I created and offered a workshop for them to explain and model the concept so they could then work with their child at home. I repeated this workshop at Aquinas College for a group of students studying to teach Special Education (at the request of the professor).Highlight: I was working on my Master’s degree in Educational Leadership at this time. My thesis project was to create a Personal Finance class. The process closely follows the ADDIE process that is used in online instructional design, just without the technology piece.What I learned: I discovered that students with severe language disabilities have difficulty taking hints and decoding nuances, for example. So I figured out how to communicate more clearly, using simple and transparent speech. Instead of saying, “you might want to know this,” I would say, “THIS is on the test.” This approach to speaking has also helped in my future jobsProfessionally, I honestly did a self-evaluation. My director was not critical and did not share areas to work on. Working with another colleague, we searched for online evaluations that were available. Using those as a starting point, I analyzed my strengths and weaknesses. Then I made concrete plans to address the weaknesses. For accountability, my colleague and I shared our self-assessments and plans.
