The role required me to greatly increase my knowledge and capabilities in radiological imaging procedures.During the first half of my time spent in this role, a large proportion of my time was spent working in health screening for immigration into New Zealand – in particular, Tuberculosis screening. This involved imaging patients who often had no understanding of English, so I was required to learn how to communicate effectively what was required for the imaging procedures in different languages, meaning I could perform the imaging examinations safely and with sufficient understanding and cooperation from patients. Through regular CPD, I improved my ability to perform this role by progressing my understanding of lung diseases and their radiographic appearances, to minimise the needs for patient recalls and subsequent delays in the immigration processing time. I also became competent with the eMedical computer system – an electronic health processing system used by the Australian and New Zealand Governments. During the second half of my time in this role, a large proportion of my time was spent working alongside highly experienced sports medicine specialists. Many patients were professional athletes, who required prompt, high-class treatment to speed up their recovery to minimise the impact of their injuries on their careers. Both of these features of the role were in combination with general outpatient imaging services, including referrals from GPs and specialist care pathways, which also had higher-level requirements than the imaging services in the NHS does. This comprised working both as an integrated member of a trauma team and independently. The role involved general radiography and theatre radiography with a regular informal rotation through the paediatric imaging department. I also gained experience in fluoroscopy including ERCPs, arthrograms and some barium studies. This role involved working with students of various levels and included out of hours working. I also maintained regular CPD, ranging from image interpretation to time spent observing in the Cath Lab and Interventional Radiology Departments.During my time working in this role, I expanded my role in the following ways: • Underwent a part-time secondment to research, coordinating data collection and patient contact for the hospital’s clinical trials in radiology.• Joined the hospital's exclusive Pain Clinic team, where I gained experience in procedures including cervical cordotomies – palliative care techniques which are currently carried out in only four centres across the UK. • Mentored newly qualified radiographers who were just starting to work independently and work out of hours. • Gave tutorials to newly qualified radiographers on how to carry out "long leg alignment" and "whole spine" views where image stitching is required.• Assisted coordinating elective radiography student timetables.
