At one point in my career, I made a career change.I began to work in Education. I had to learn on the job because I didn't have formal education in Teaching. The most difficult set of skills I had to learn was how to communicate with students so I could help them reach their educational goals. Sometimes this was a classroom management issue and sometimes it was building a relationship with the student to help them overcome obstacles in their personal lives which were effecting their efforts to become better students. In general students need to view the subject matter they are learning as relevant to their lives in order to really want to learn it! For example, when I taught Spanish in High School did not see a reason why then needed to learn it. When would they ever have chance to use Spanish? How would learning Spanish benefit them? So I took every opportunity to show them how by using a wide range of lesson plans which exposed them to how Spanish was already a part of their world. For example, I showed them songs which were popular and originally in Spanish, then in English. We read the lyrics in Spanish and translated them into English, learning vocabulary and other parts of speech. This opened their horizons to another culture too! Learning about jobs which utilize Spanish was also very motivating!
