My decade-long career in tech began with an early obsession with the connection between people and products. As a child, my mother would sit me in front of cartoons on Saturday mornings. I would happily play, ignoring the sounds of Bugs Bunny in the background, until the squeaky voices and silly pictures gave way to the snappy jingles of commercials. I loved listening to people talk about all the features in a new Ford, or the differences between a Wendy’s burger and “those other guys” (spoiler alert: it was the beef).As I grew older, my love of commercials gave way to a love of technology. Whether it was playing Nintendo with my grandmother (she played a mean game of Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past) or connecting with people around the world on ICQ, I knew that I wanted to be right in the heart of it all.Although my love for technology was strong, certain aspects started to bother me. When Microsoft came out with the original Xbox, I bemoaned that the controllers were too unwieldy for my daintier hands. When downloading on Napster became mainstream, I wished for a way to legally obtain digital copies.At the height of my complaining, a friend suggested I try beta testing. I got myself into a test group, and I was hooked. For the first time, my voice had the ability to shape the products around me. Some betas died off, but others went on to spawn products we still use today, like the Swype keyboard or the augmented reality game Ingress, which became the technological precursor to Pokemon Go. I’ll admit, there’s a bit of a rush in seeing a product you’ve had even the smallest impact on be embraced by the world.
