Founding Software Architect, Storageless Data Orchestration

San Mateo, California, Us

Data resides on storage. Until now, enterprises have serviced their data needs by using limiting and binding storage-centric constructs. At Hammerspace I am responsible for building the capabilities to provide data-as-a-service. This means data moves freely between storage containers - on-premises, in-cloud, hybrid and geo-distributed - unbeknownst to the application that's accessing it. Also, the data-user can directly express intent via service-level-objectives to effortlessly control where the data must reside at any given time at a file-granular level. The result is storageless data orchestration, akin to serverless compute. When the data is present in the public cloud the analytics capabilities available there are harnessed to derive metadata from it and provide for further orchestration and life-cycle management, even combining the insights derived from multiple cloud vendors. The technologies that my team and I have built to enable this vision include:- An agoric data placement engine; simulated storage costs and real service-level-objectives provide an economic model to place the right data on the right storage.- Data movers; live data mobility when moving between NAS systems and chunked, compressed, encrypted and deduplicated mobility into object (S3, Azure, GCP) for archival and geo-distributed replication.- A per-file state-machine-based data mobility control engine; responsible for co-ordinating corruption-free access for client systems to their data while it is under mobility.- A Merkle-tree based database to enable de-duplication and cost-optimized access to data when in the public cloud.- A key management server to enable encryption of data in-transit and at-rest on-prem or in the cloud, especially using keys managed by customers themselves in their HSMs/KMSes (BYOK).- A workflow using serverless lambda functions to harvest content metadata and make them available in the metadata catalog.More in my blog post & interview below:

Mar 2018 - Aug 2021

Software Architect

Led the software architecture of the data components responsible for data mobility across file and object. Conceptualized and drove the system design for all features requiring data mobility. Built the code for portions of the end-to-end deliverables.

Dec 2016 - Mar 2018

Engineering Team Lead

Managed an 8-10 person team to build the product's data management layer. The team wasgeographically distributed between the SF Bay Area, Salt Lake City, Israel and India. This layerconsisted of components interacting together to provide intent-drive non-disruptive data mobility acrossfile and object storage. To provide an analogy, my team and I built the capabilities for storage similar towhat VMware built for compute - non-disruptive data mobility across disparate storage systems. All thecapabilities were built from scratch in conjunction with understanding the required aspects of the pNFSflex-files protocol to make it happen. The components that my team built & owned were:- A data management engine responsible for continuous measurement and optimization- A data allocation engine responsible to pre-allocating storage and tracking its assignment to files- A data mobility control module that co-ordinated data mobility using state-machines.- The movers that mobilized data between NAS volumes and between NAS and Object volumes. These movers talked NFSv3 or the various flavors of the Object protocol to read and write data.- The de-duplication engine responsible for optimizing usage on Object volumes.- The drivers needed to perform cloning on various types of storage volumes- All tooling required to automate the triaging of issues arising anywhere in the data mobility pipelineI also periodically delivered training sessions to Customer Support and QA teams on the end-to-end system design and its operation.

Nov 2014 - Mar 2018

Software Engineer

Veritas Software Corporation

Veritas Cluster Server (VCS)-- Prototyped an innovative method of monitoring applications (AMF) for high-availability clustering applications (patent pending) on the AIX platform by developing a kernel-extension.-- Integrated AMF with VCS under the Intelligent Monitoring Framework and demonstrate a working and extensible model for the same.-- Developed and tested features for VCS.
