I am a senior professor at the Institute of Biomedicine, The Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg Sweden. I have been the medical director of the cell transplantation unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital for 15 years and is leading a research group focused on cartilage regeneration, osteoarthritis, and stem cells. I received my Ph.D. degree in 1986 and did my post-doc at Harvard Medical School 1987–1988. The research on human chondrocytes commenced in 1985 and was pioneered together with my colleagues and friends Professors and Drs. Lars Peterson and Mats Brittberg the use of autologous chondrocyte transplantation (ACT) for the treatment of cartilage defects. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine (331:889-895, 1994) where he was the corresponding author, and the article is one of the most cited in orthopedics. Over 2000 patients have been treated with ACT with cells processed in the cell laboratory and the technology has been used by several companies, The treatment received FDA approval in 1997 and EMEA 2010 resulting in over 50000 patients treated worldwide. Eighteen Ph.D. students and 6 post-docs have been under my supervision and I have written over 160 articles in the field of chondrocyte regeneration and stem cells with over 14000 citations and an H-index of 54 (Web of Science April 2022). My scientific skills involving various aspects of cell biology with publications in stem cells including embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells. Precision medicine and bioinformatics in osteoarthritis is one of many focuses in my research.I was the co-founder of biotech companies in the field of stem cells (Cellartis in 2002 Now Takara Bio Europe), orthopedics (CellMatrix AB) and diagnostics and holds patents in diagnostics and treatment of early osteoarthritis and stem cell technology (Inventor: WO/2005/059116 and US20190137514, Patent holder: SE542968).Bieside position as academic professor I was Director of the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory at Sahlgrenska University Hospital from 2005 – to 2017 and upheld several appointments at the Sahlgrenska Academy of Gothenburg University, and I am currently the Vice Head of the Department of Biomedicine.
