Business Development Manager - Airtime / Handset Distribution
Data Select is part of the Phones International Group owned by Peter Jones of Dragon’s Den Fame. Initially head hunted as part of a team to create a new airtime division specialising in the fulfilment of B2C connections for distance sellers. My role was to develop and manage a portfolio of dealers selling mobile phone airtime and handsets via telemarketing and online advertising. Offering a complete fulfilment and connections package. In this highly volatile market I was tasked to balance the profit of this business against the exposure to network clawback claims from connections that failed to meet bill payments. This required continual monitoring of my dealer’s connections and quality levels, whilst helping them to develop promotions to secure the volumes of connections required.
Business Development Manager - B2C / B2B Airtime
Initially employed to develop and manage airtime connection business from both B2C and B2B dealers throughout the South East. The dealer manager team was asked to assist the distance selling department with a critical overexposure issue. We were asked to incorporate distance selling dealers within our individual territories. Despite a steep learning curve I was able to secure double the connection volumes in my territory and bring down the exposure to network clawbacks to below maximum levels. After the company was refinanced the distance selling team was approached to join the more stable Data Select to create a new airtime division.
Sales Manager / Mobile Business Manager
Initially responsible for targeting and prospecting for new Telecommunications business in the SME sector. My role quickly expanded to also being responsible for all handset purchasing and stock control. Keeping stock levels to the minimum I was able to negotiate faster delivery options from our suppliers and virtually eliminate wastage and shrinkage of stock. I was instrumental in the decision to replace the existing CRM platform and implement ACT across all areas of the business. This allowed for a much easier flow of information and gave each sales team real time reports tracking contract end dates. This ensured we were keeping a closer grip on our major clients repelling competing offers from the networks directly. When UK Cellphone became an LLP I was invited to be a partner in this business. With a view to build the business ready for sale to assist its growth. When UK Cellphone LLP was eventually sold to Optimal Communications, My role was to oversee the sales team and the day to day operations. I expanded and managed the sales team and also to generate extra revenue I set up a small department to refurbish Nokia handsets and re-supply them as a vastly reduced cost of buying new handsets. This cheaper option suited our more industrial clients and of course significantly improved the profitability. Allowing us to compete further with our network suppliers.
