About Andre Phillips

Often found in nearest river looking at fish. I am a fish biologist with a specialisation in dealing with challenging field conditions with complementary statistical and scientific writing ability. Since growing up in the Niger delta, I have been fascinated by the natural world and since university, by the unknowns out there. Answering those unknowns in innovative yet rigorous ways has led me through my PhD and now into new challenges in a variety of research roles with a marine consultancy company, fisheries and comparative analysis.I am now looking for the next challenge for my research and outdoor skills.Free time is spent helping others enjoy outdoors as much as possible as a canoe coach. Otherwise cooking and exercising off said cooking.

    The Marine Fish Eggs Project is a large database collection and analysis project investigating the relationships between egg size, parental care and environment. My role has been to design, build and collect data for this database utilising R and MS Access. The database currently includes most known marine fishes (14740sp) with referenced information for habitat, size, egg characteristics, offspring care and mating system. The project has now shifted to encompass freshwater species.This project has greatly improved my data management skills and data collection for comparative studies. The analysis from this work and the dataset will be published in an appropriate journal upon completion.

    The project goal was the design of an automated data collection device for better understanding of catch by Inshore Fisheries via photography of crustacean catch.Primary tasks were Scotland-wide data collection from fishermen volunteering their catch. I additionally mediated of interests of a consultancy company (SeaScope Fisheries Research), MASTS (Marine Alliance for Science and Technology in Scotland) and fishermen who volunteered their catch for the data and may ultimately use the device. This required excellent interpersonal and communication skills alongside high quality data collection.The data collection aspect of the project was successfully passed to SeaScope for the next stage of the project.

    An interviewed, part-time paid position on the sports department committee, working alongside full time management and administration staff to help dictate the direction of university sport.My role was to administrate the membership for over 1200 students and 55 clubs. I was also the fleet manager for 6 vehicles rented to clubs, managing their condition and rental. I additionally took minutes and produced action plans for Senior Management meetings.Through this role I learnt vital managerial and communication skills across multiple committees.I overhauled the university transport booking system and procedures, improving efficiency, accountability and transparency with this system still in use.
