My work involves the construction of policies and strategies for the City of Cape Town; lengthy development timelines which require intimate stakeholder engagement, the consolidation of widely-held views, and the patience to review problems from a variety of perspectives. Thinking within systems certainly helps. The work is enormously satisfying when it reaches conclusion. Recently I was fortunate to experience this feeling with the City's approval of its Human Settlements Strategy. (https://resource.capetown.gov.za/documentcentre/Documents/City%20strategies,%20plans%20and%20frameworks/Human_Settlements_Strategy.pdf)The intersection of strategy development with day to day functionality is at the point of thinking transversally; implementing strategy across a large organisation which addresses a diversity of needs within society. Increasingly, the ability to act collaboratively, leveraging strengths that sit outside of our natural ambits, is becoming crucial for obtaining strategic objectives. The demands of this role are more prevalent within my space than ever before. From my side, its a willing maturation for the direction of strategy development and implementation.Outside of my office hours, I am intrigued by the power of private sector funding to drive social and economic change. I am writing a thesis which considers the will of retail investors (everyday investors) in South Africa, and what opportunities they are presented with to invest in companies and initiatives that have dual impact (final return and social good).
