He holds courses and conferences at University and PhD level in Italy and abroad. He published several papers and monographs at the international level. Large part of his activity takes place in developing or emerging countries (in particular Egypt and Latin America). Advises governmental institutions, Universities and research centres and international NGOs , always on applied research projects.He is co founder of the Italian Centre for River Restoration (CIRF, Venezia; www.cirf.org), which promotes an integrated approach to planning and management of river courses through technical publications, opinion documents, courses, workshops , study trips and pilot projects. He was its first Technical Director for several years and then its director of scientific research and international cooperation. Currently (2021) he is leading Fundacion CREACUA (Riohacha, Colombia) on similar themes as emerging countries like Colombia have a lot of problems concerning water and rivers and a lot of opportunities to avoid typical mistakes.Features characterizing typical planning and management problems of water resources and river basin management are: complex environmental issues, decision making, sustainable development, interest conflicts and particularly river management and restoration. His approach is highly trans-disciplinary, ranging from System Analysis (System Theory, mathematical modeling of water resources systems, decision analysis, information technology), environmental economics (integrated evaluation, policies on resources use), environmental and Earth sciences (hydrology, hydraulics and fluvial geomorphology), as well as social sciences (communication, public participation, conflict resolution, value analysis).
