I am a member of the scientific staff at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, working in the area of plasma physics. I am leading a team of 19 scientists and engineers working on several projects to engineer a dense plasma focus (DPF) Z-pinch device for multiple applications. We are using both experiments and particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations to better understand and optimize these devices. One of our key capabilities is fully kinetic modeling of these devices using a particle-in-cell code which can predict neutron yield from first principles. Our team has designed and built the MegaJOuLe Neutron Imaging Radiography (MJOLNIR) DPF for source development in support of flash neutron radiography. We also have multiple small DPF experiments which can be used for code validation, rapid prototyping, and diagnostic development. Our team is also helping develop flow z-pinches for fusion energy, developing compact neutron sources with field ionizer ion sources, and modeling High-Powered Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HiPIMS) discharges.

I worked simultaneously in two fields in my postdoctoral appointment. One was in the area of plasma physics and the other was in the electrical grid research field. In the field of plasma physics, I used a PIC code to model plasma and EM fields inside a dense plasma focus (DPF) fast Z-pinch experiment, with the goal of using this technology for compact particle accelerator applications. In this work, I published the first fully kinetic simulations of a DPF including electrodes, and showed that a fully kinetic model was needed to correctly predict neutron yield and ion beam energies. Using this model, I observed for the first time oscillations in the electric field near the lower hybrid frequency, implicating the presence of lower hybrid drift instability in the Z-pinch plasma. In the field of electrical grid research, I worked on a project that integrated multi-physics ensembles of weather/renewable forecasts with a stochastic unit commitment production model under a 33% renewable portfolio standard (RPS) in CA. This was a framework for creating a realistic "state of the grid" on the 5-minute time scale for an entire year, for the purposes of assessing the value of demand response and storage under high renewables.
  • Massachusetts Institute Of Technology
    Graduate Research Assistant, Physics Department
Massachusetts Institute Of Technology Sep 2004 - May 2011
    Cambridge, Ma
Operated and collected data from a hard x-ray camera to image Bremsstrahlung emission due to lower-hybrid driven fast electrons on Alcator C-Mod, MIT's Tokamak (toroidal fusion reactor). Developed model to infer electron transport properties in fusion plasmas from x-ray measurements. Ran, modified, and iterated between ray-tracing and Fokker-Planck codes to simulate a variety of plasma scenarios. Worked with code developers to benchmark software against experimental data and competing codes using synthetic diagnostics. Managed and analyzed over 1 TB of x-ray data, shared by research team of 100 scientists and engineers. Met with Congressional staff in Washington, D.C. to lobby for $300M annual fusion budget. Led outreach activities to educate public about fusion and fusion research. Co-authored 7 refereed papers (1 first author), presented at 6 conferences.
  • Massachusetts Institute Of Technology (Mit)
