As the director and CEO ("Vorstand") of the Leibniz Institute of Surface Engineering (IOM), I lead a team of 150 scientists and staff in advancing the field of surface engineering and its applications in various fields, such as ultra-precision surface engineering, energy, biomedicine, and nanotechnology. I also hold a professorship in applied physics at Leipzig University, where I teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in plasma physics and materials sciences. With over 35 years of research experience, 25 of which at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, I have authored three books and more than 350 peer-reviewed publications, which have been cited more than 23,000 times.In addition to my scientific and academic roles, I served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Applied Physics (2014-2024), overseeing the editorial process and ensuring the quality and relevance of the journal's content. I have also been actively involved in various professional organizations, such as the American Vacuum Society (AVS), the American Physical Society (APS), the Institute of Physics (IoP), IEEE, and the Society of Vacuum Coaters (SVC), where I have been recognized as a fellow and received several awards for my contributions. With my activities I aim to foster collaboration and innovation in the plasma physics and materials sciences communities, and to promote the value of surface engineering for energy-related issues and the society as a whole.
