Director Of Professional Development
Current
Professional Development/Talent Management Consultant & Certified Executive Coach
I founded a Canada-wide consulting business, providing talent management services to international, national, and local law firms and to public sector legal departments. I also coached individual lawyers. My business launched in Australia, before I returned home to Canada in 2009.My practice included:Talent management processes and programs – As a talent management “gun for hire” I created new, or revitalized existing, internal processes including performance reviews and associate development planning. I also recommended ways to invigorate in-house talent management programming, such as mentoring programs, and practice group and firm wide CLE series. Strategic planning – I facilitated strategic planning for organizations and partnerships at various stages. In some cases, I worked with them to uncover their mission, vision, and values before developing a strategy to reflect them. In others, I helped them drive existing vision and strategy by discerning short to medium term priorities and planning how to act on them. Designing and delivering workshops – I love working with groups, and have delivered hundreds of workshops ranging from one-hour to two-day seminars on topics that include productivity, communication, connection (networking, mentoring), and business/career planning. I also designed workshops for internal presenters to teach.Coaching – Firms and individuals hired me to coach lawyers who are preparing for a leadership role to find greater focus and productivity, and develop a career and business strategy. I also worked with lawyers going through a transition (e.g. maternity leave, organizational change).
Professional Development Manager
Baker McKenzie is a global law firm with 77 offices in 47 countries. I joined Baker McKenzie Australia in 2002 as the first full-time lead for its Professional Development (now Talent Management) program, reporting to the COO. I created the learning strategy and curriculum for 500 lawyers and staff in Sydney and Melbourne. As the program lead I:- revitalized and rolled out the lawyers’ development (competency) framework for the Australian offices, and rolled out the expanded global version introduced later- created and branded a curriculum for the Australian offices to support the development framework, with myriad programs at the practice group, office, and peer group level- consulted with practice group and shared services leaders on PD strategy for their teams- coached individual lawyers on career development and performance issues- oversaw the programming of two national off-sites annually – a working retreat for all lawyers, and one that we created for all newly admitted and laterally hired associates- contributed to Asia Pacific and global working parties, retreats, and initiatives as an instructional designer and a presenter- managed a large annual budget - managed external vendor contracts and relationships
Senior Associate
I joined the Melbourne Employee Relations practice of this premier Australia-based global law firm in May 2000, was seconded to Sydney in November 2000, and appointed Senior Associate in October 2001. My client work focused on equal opportunity, privacy, and general employment law; 10-20% of that practice was delivering workshops on preventing and investigating complaints of inappropriate workplace conduct. In 2001, seconded to the Legal and Regulatory group at Telstra, Australia's leading telecommunications company. Edited Freehills’ bi-monthly client publication Employee Relations Review, and published in industry periodicals like Equal Opportunity Update, HR Monthly, Human Resources, and Employment Law Bulletin.
Associate
I joined Blake Dawson Waldron (now Ashurst), a top-tier Australian law firm, as a solicitor upon my arrival from Canada. My practice focussed on employment, workplace equal opportunity, and labour law matters. In early 2000, I designed the pilot program for a major equal opportunity training initiative at Australia Post, leading the team of lawyers that delivered workshops to over 900 employees.
Associate
Joined as an articling student and was made an associate in 1994, practicing in employee relations and working mainly in the health, forestry, and post-secondary education sectors. Appeared with senior counsel in complex Supreme Court trials and as lead counsel in mediations and hearings before the BC Human Rights Commission, the BC Labour Relations Board and the BC Supreme Court.
