I worked on the firmware for various models of the Amazon Ring doorbells and security cameras. The firmware was written in C++ and running on Embedded Linux. I designed a security service that was running in the firmware and communicating with a serverless AWS backend, which I also fully designed and implemented using Typescript. I also worked on designing an algorithm to filter interference from sensor data and various other parts of the firmware.

I ported the CDI2 Simulator, which was written for Linux running on an ARM-based Cyclone V, to the RTEMS operating system running on a big-endian PowerPC with 24 cores. In this project we used the CDI2 Simulator as the basis for the CDI2 implementation in an actual bank note sorting machine. I gained a lot of experience on how to write truly portable C++ code. I ported a huge legacy code-base designed for little-endian DSP processors to the RTEMS operating system running on a big-endian PowerPC. I used the Unit Test Framework Catch2 and Test Driven Development (TDD) with the help of Gitlab CI, to ensure that the code continues to produce identical results. I used a Userspace IO Network Driver for Linux to implement a high performance image grabber for the Xposure line-scan camera. My implementation is currently being used in the next generation of the RoadStar, a 3D Road Surface Scanner for highways. In this application, the RoadStar Truck is driving along the highway at normal high highway speed, while two Xposure Cameras record a stereo image of the road surface with 1.7 GiB/s (13.7 Gibit/s) each. These images are then stored on two SSDs for later analysis.

I designed and developed a C++ simulator for the Common Detector Interface 2 (CDI2), which is used as a communications standard for bank note sorting machines in central banks like the ECB.The simulator runs on multiple small Cyclone V boards, which communicate using a real-time Ethernet Powerlink connection. Although, the simulator is written in C++, it can be almost fully controlled by Lua scripts. I gained a lot of experience debugging complex embedded systems, where code is running simultaneously in userspace, the Linux Kernel and the real-time NIOS2 Soft Core.

I worked mainly for the Xposure Project, which is a high-speed line-scan camera for industrial applications. I designed and developed the embedded Linux C++ application running on the camera, which, on the one hand, controls the Arria10 FPGA, and on the other hand, implements the UDP/IP based GigEVision protocol on the 10G network interface. Furthermore, I worked on the Linux Kernel Driver for the network interface used on the camera, and I wrote so-called receipts for the Ångström Linux distribution. Additionally, I wrote the XposurePlayer, which is a Windows Software written in C\# to grab images from the Xposure camera using the GigEVision standard. Since, I was the only software developer for this project, I made all the design decisions.
