This position's primary function was to plan and advise management with regard to labour compliance and challenges. I also engaged in direct communication and problem-solving with union leadership, looking for collaborative solutions where possible. I received, responded to and managed grievances. There were two bargaining units at Cambrian: academic and support, and each had its own complex collective agreement and specific dynamics to take into account. This position was also responsible for providing coaching and advice to managers, not only when faced with grievances, but also to help navigate difficult situations effectively while minimizing risk. Both the legal and the HR aspects of the position included providing advice to all managers from the President down on a variety of legal and employment matters. The position included acting as co-lead of the Enterprise Risk Management team. The position was responsible for staff development programs for many years. The HRIS and Compensation Coordinator reports to this position.

Expanded labour role to more fully include academic employee issues, so that now the portfolio included: workload complaints, classification grievances and all manner of other grievances and employment claims.Nurtured relationships with unions and senior management resulting in one of the lowest grievance rates/labour challenges among Ontario’s 24 public colleges.Led, along with Payroll and IT, development of replacement HRIS, bringing Payroll in-house and adding improved functionality and integration with other enterprise systems. Expanded role in provincial organization of colleges, esp joining then chairing the Central Arbitration Review Committee.
