As a disability adjudicator, I specialized in the adjudication of disability benefit applications for eligible Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) clients. I am responsible for researching, analyzing, assessing, and evaluating medical and legal information, including legislation, policies, guidelines, and regulations, to render entitlement and assessment decisions related to disability benefits offered through VAC. As part of the SPIKE initiative, my team’s goal is to diminish the backlog of disability claims within stream-specific national standards. Organized and provided team with CAF 101 sessions to provide team members new to clients from Canadian Armed Forces the background and information required to provide exemplary services to our clients.Organized and provided team with informal “tech talk” demonstrations to members new to the virtual environment. Provided one-on-one technological assistance to bring members up-to-speed with the technology available and coached my colleagues for them to be comfortable in working within the virtual space. Provided an initial workflow analysis and presented observations and opportunities for digitization to the Manager of Products, Projects, and Initiatives of the Business Integration Directorate.

As part of the Master of Health Informatics program, I completed a practicum placement at St. Michael’s Hospital’s Project Management Office and participated in the SMH 3.0 project. SMH 3.0 is St. Michael’s Hospital’s redevelopment project to expand the hospital’s physical space as well as embedded technological infrastructure including intranet, new nurse call/alarm management system, real-time locating system (RTLS), closed-loop communication, electronic whiteboard (eWB) and an enterprise service bus (ESB) that will integrate all systems. My work in the SMH 3.0 project included Phase 1 of the new Emergency Department (ED) and initial project planning of the enterprise service bus (ESB): As part of Phase 1 of the new Emergency Department (ED), my work included:• Development of a Mobile IP Phone Quick Start Guide;• Testing and validating the new telephony in the new and old ED space including 51 desktop phones, 14 wireless mobile IP phones and the accessories associated with the wireless mobile IP phones; and• Planned and executed the testing of the overhead paging in the entire ED prior to Go-Live.As part of the enterprise service bus (ESB), my work included:• Participated in working groups, planning meetings and white-boarding sessions;• Conducted current and future state analyses using appropriate models including BPMN and DFD using Microsoft Visio and Lucidchart, as well as validated these workflow analyses with the appropriate stakeholders;• Completed 33 future state analyses of Day 1 ESB Use Cases, 16 current state analyses of SMH’s Emergency Codes, Patient Transport/Housekeeping system, Security’s Real Time Location System (RTLS), and Food Production System; and• Maintained decision log, drafted status reports, completed an initial draft of the Project Charter, and created an overall project plan and a pilot eWB project plan using Microsoft Project and Microsoft Excel.

As a Nursing Officer I provided primary and tertiary patient care to ill and injured Forces members, either in Canadian Forces Health Care Centres in Canada, or in acute care hospitals. I provided preventive, occupational and environmental health care services through practice as well as through health education and policy development. I worked within a collaborative practice model with other members of the health care team and have the opportunity to work in different domains of nursing practice including: • Clinical/patient care delivery, • Health services policy development,• Administration, and• Training and education. Gained significant experience in medical-surgical nursing as part of the Canadian Forces Health Services’ Maintenance of Clinical Skills/Readiness Program. Practiced in medical-surgical floors and Emergency Department at various hospitals including: • B2 Vascular Surgery and ENT and A5 Medicine at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus; • 5NW Medicine and Emergency Department at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus; and • Medicine Floor and Surgical Floor at the Queensway Carleton Hospital.Gained experience in facilitating group activities and deliver training sessions in an adult learning environment: • In 2009 as part of the Montfort Project at the Canadian Forces Health Services Centre (Ottawa), I was responsible for training all clinic staff in the new building layout, policies, and procedures. I developed a training plan, organized training, and orientation sessions for all personnel in the clinic. • From 2009 to 2014, in addition to my regular role as a Nursing Officer, I was also a First Aid and CPR Instructor as part of my secondary duties. I organized and delivered first aid and CPR refresher courses to personnel at the clinic on a regularly basis. • In 2015, I provided leadership and management of the Designated Assistant Course, including day-to-day administration, advertisement, communication, and coordination.

Integrated Personnel Support Centre (Ottawa)

Responsible for the coordination, advice, leadership, information and recommendations in the provision of casualty support services to ill/injured Canadian Armed Forces members, veterans and their families in accordance with department policies, regulations, programs, benefits and initiatives. I work in an interdisciplinary team from Canadian Forces Health Services (CF H Svcs), Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), Military Family Resources Centre (MFRC), Operational Stress Injury Social Support (OSISS), Royal Canadian Legion, Base Personnel Selection Officer (BPSO), and SISIP Financial Services.Assisted the Services Manager in the effective operation of the unit and provide support to the promotion of programs and services; And identify gaps and deficiencies and make recommendations to management on improvements.Assisted the Services Manager in the hiring of new Services Coordinators, including the development of written examination and interview questions in collaboration with the Services Manager and HR representative. I was also responsible for the assessment and scoring of the written examination and interviewed candidates with the Service Manager. Provided leadership and management of the Designated Assistant Course, a qualification for military officers to assist Next-of-kin of deceased or seriously ill/injured members including day-to-day administration, advertisement, communication, and coordination. Prioritized course requests based on unit’s operational needs and organized guest speakers from various service partners. Facilitated teaching throughout the 3-day course including coaching participants in small-group discussions. Maintained records, databases, and prepared reports using but not limited to Microsoft Office Suites.

As the Immunization Team Lead, responsible for the well-being of Canadian Armed Forces members of the National Capital Region by providing comprehensive Immunization and Allergy Injection Program, Off-site Influenza Clinics and by liaising with the Health Promotion Team for Health and Wellness Program. With my team and in partnership with our Preventive Medicine team, provided vaccination and travel counseling to personnel in High Readiness Units, OUTCAN postings, and deployment under the direction of Force Health Protection. I supervised the Immunization/Allergy Clinic including staffing, vaccines, supplies, equipment and infrastructure. Coordinated with all military units within the National Capital Region and organized off-site influenza clinics. Mapped clinical process and redesigned Allergist referral processImproved the efficiency of the clinic, patient and staff satisfaction by restructuring how the appointment template is structured and how appointments are booked. Restructured appointment template, provided staff with additional hours for administration and professional development.Drafted and implemented staff orientation manual.Identified the need for an Immunization Screening Tool to improve vaccination safety. My recommendation was approved by Clinic Manager and at the National Force Health Protection Headquarters. As a result, a national working group was stood up to develop the screening tool.Participated in National Immunization Screening Tool Working Group. The Working Group successfully developed and implemented a tool that is currently being used by all Canadian Forces Immunization Clinic, improving patient safety nationwide.

As the Patient Liaison Nurse, assisted and provided direction regarding the medical and administrative support services available to Canadian Armed Forces members while hospitalized in the National Capital Region. Under the direction of the Base Surgeon, coordinated the provision of continuity of care for Canadian Armed Forces members discharged from civilian hospitals in the National Capital Region including home care, equipment, supplies or necessary services required to support them in their recovery during immediate discharge phase. I was also responsible for the repatriation or air medical evacuation of Canadian Armed Forces member back to Ottawa from around the world often at a moment’s notice. Repatriation responsibilities included but not limited to liaison with local hospital, establishment of transportation of patient from flight line to hospital, liaison of Casualty Management Team including the Base Surgeon, Canadian Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs Case Managers, Chaplain, member’s chain of command, Public Affairs, Military Police, and other personnel assigned to participate in the repatriation.

As the Primary Care Nurse, I treated patients with acute or chronic illnesses or injury on an episodic, outpatient basis within my scope of practice and under the supervision of the Medical Officer. Treatment included screening, triage, patient education, pain management, care planning, discharge planning and other interventions to restore, maintain or promote patient’s health. In collaboration with my Care Delivery Unit Leader, I also coordinated the daily functioning of my Care Delivery Unit’s operations through supervision of my administrative support staff and scheduling of three physicians, one physician assistant, one nurse practitioner, and four medical technicians. Participated in regular leadership meetings, and chaired weekly staff and case review meetings. Provided leadership to my Care Delivery Unit during Primary Care Progress Notes (PCPN) Implementation as part of final phase of Canadian Forces Health Information System (CFHIS) project. Coordinated all necessary computer equipment and software training for all members in the care delivery unit (including physicians, nurses, medical technicians, and clerks).Drafted and finalized down-time procedures, and provided on-site troubleshooting. Our Care Delivery Unit successfully transitioned from paper charts to up-to-date and legible electronic notes, vastly improving our care delivery.Conducted audit on five Care Delivery Units’ rosters through CFHIS and provided the executive leadership an accurate number of patients rostered to each Care Delivery Unit. Provided analysis on process flow and wait-time measurements including 3NAA and recommended measures in continuous quality improvement.Reviewed utilization rates of Treatment Room and provided data to the executive team in shortening hours of operations and adequate allocation of resources.Performed SWOT analysis of the Care Delivery Unit with input and feedback from staff members and provided analysis to the executive leadership.
