    As part of University Rover Challenge (URC) team I designed components for a Mars Rover vehicle in SolidWorks and machined parts in Ryerson’s machine shop using lathes, milling machines, and drill presses. I gained knowledge of GD&T and design and manufacturing of Robotic Systems,My capstone was also affiliated with the Ryerson Rams Robotics Rover. We redesigned and manufactured a new Mars rover wheel system that was lighter and reduced loading on the suspension system. Several design iterations were investigated with various tread geometries, materials and manufacturing processes considered. Hub and tire designs were analyzed and optimized using SolidWorks’ simulation suite and FEA in Ansys to determine performance under expected loading and to minimize material requirements. A design that allowed for rapid prototyping was selected, using 3D printed hubs and molds to cast polyurethane tires. Small scale models were created to validate our proof of concept and manufacturing methods. Afterwards, full scale prototypes were manufactured and tested during operation through measurement of the forces on the rover suspension via load cells. The design and manufacturing process were iterated until design objectives and competition standards were met.
