Weight scales for medical applications have been in practise for almost 250 years. New creative technologies allow for medical practitioners and ordinary people alike to record their weight with relative degrees of accuracy due to the standards set by the UK Weighing Federation (UKWF). New technologies offer many new advantages; including measuring a heavier load. The calibration process works by incrementally increasing weight to a set value and then decreasing using the same method. Calibrating these scales is a rigorous process of transferring numerous large weights (20kg blocks) to ensure equipment is working as prescribed. This is the system adopted for calibration. Applying a mechanical alternative to increase force axially will increase safety significantly. Technicians, who routinely calibrate these machines will not injure themselves transferring weights; improving their longevity and avoiding any musculoskeletal damage. A highly accurate system will aid staff in ensuring that the display weight is correct for that patient. Which in turn, will lead to the correct medication and chemotherapy dosages being prescribed. A portable calibration system will help technicians travel from ward to ward, and from clinic to clinic with ease. A baseplate is also incorporated to level the scales with certainty. With a fully functioning prototype it will be very easy to replicate. In turn the NHS will be able to manufacture multiple systems that can be deployed in the field rapidly to ensure that all scales are functioning correctly.
