Growing up I was surrounded by craftspeople, building or making things that most other people would just buy. This instilled a fascination within me for how and why things operate or happen in the ways they do. I studied history and philosophy as an undergraduate, letting this fascination propel me through my liberal arts coursework. I had thought that I was going to pursue an academic position after finishing my MA in philosophy but the fascination that had driven me was met by the wholly unanticipated reality of contemporary academia. The fascination and curiosity were still there but I was looking for different ways to express it.I am a politics nerd and news stories of major data breaches or state-sponsored cyber intrusions always fascinated me in their political aspect. I have always been interested in technology and its effect on people, but now I turned this curiosity to the technology itself. I might be able to answer why a person or group may want to disrupt some organization, but how is it that a few individuals can (potentially) disrupt a corporation only using computers and the knowledge in their own minds?This 'how' question became the object of my fascination, and what pushed me into understanding as much about this as I can, a task which (happily) has no ending. The ubiquity of information technology, although relatively novel, brings with it perennial human concerns. Safety, integrity, authenticity, commerce, privacy, trust, etc may operate differently in this realm but the function is the same. I am passionate about this field, a passion matched only by my curiosity and drive to understand more.
