In addition to performing the duties of a Senior Deputy, I supervise Deputy and Senior Deputy State Public Defenders representing people sentenced to death in their direct appeals and habeas corpus proceedings. This includes mentoring new attorneys, reviewing and editing briefing and other filings, monitoring case progress, consulting on cases, conducting performance evaluations, and addressing disciplinary and HR issues. I am also part of the management team that discusses office policy. As a member of the diversity committee, I have participated in efforts to broaden our applicant pool through greater outreach and redesigning our hiring process to adopt a racial equity lens, including rewriting our interview questions and rethinking our hiring process. I have also participated in several hiring committees Most recently I participated in the hiring committee for our newly created fellowship program which included developing the initial criteria and interview questions as well as reviewing resumes and interviewing candidates. I also participated in training our most recently hired group of Deputies.

Senior Deputy State Public Defender (June 2018 - March 2020)Deputy State Public Defender (November 2016 - May 2018)I represent people sentenced to death in California State Courts on direct appeal and habeas corpus proceedings. This includes conducting record correction proceedings, filing initial and supplemental briefing, conducting oral argument, and filing petitions for rehearing in the California Supreme and petitions for a writ of certiorari in the United States Supreme Court. I am also lead attorney in a habeas corpus case where a hearing to determine whether our client has intellectual disability has been ordered. I have presented and assisted in preparing legal trainings. I have worked on a number of office-wide projects including, drafting comments on proposed court rules and preparing amicus briefing. I have also taken a leading role in a number of technology projects, including introducing new office technology, creating listservs to support the criminal defense community in implementing several new pieces of criminal law reform legislation, developing trainings and training material, and conducting trainings. In all of my cases I stay in close contact with my clients through in person visits, correspondence, and phone calls.
