I am a Professor of Sociology and Director of the Association of Religion Data Archives (theARDA.com) at the Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture at Indiana University-Indianapolis. As a social scientist, I am committed to encouraging the common good through resourcing organizations that value communication, engagement, and high quality research. I have deep experience in securing and directing grants (more than $11.5 million over my career), research design, data communication, and qualitative and mixed research methodologies. My goal as a leader is to provide an engaging vision, a roadmap to success, while empowering those around me to succeed in their roles.To that end I serve as the Executive co-Director of the Association of Religion Data Archives (theARDA.com). The ARDA is the world’s largest online religion data archive and is currently funded through generous support from Lilly Endowment, Inc., the John Templeton Foundation, and the Templeton Religion Trust. My colleagues and I at the ARDA are committed to providing numerous resources that democratize access to quality data for journalists, community development leaders, researchers, congregational and lay religious leaders, and educators. My research focuses on religion, politics, and power in contemporary American culture. I am the author of "American Idolatry: How Christian Nationalism Betrays the Gospel and Threatens the Church" which won the 2023 Foreword Reviews Gold Medal Book Award and the 2024 Midwest Book Award. I am the co-author of "Taking America Back for God: Christian Nationalism in the United States"—along with Samuel Perry—which won the 2021 Distinguished Book Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion. I am the author of over fifty peer-reviewed journal articles. In 2019 my co-authored article “Make America Christian Again: Christian Nationalism and Voting for Donald Trump in the 2016 Presidential Election” won the Distinguished Article Award for both the Association for the Sociology of Religion and the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion.My research has been featured across several national outlets including The New York Times, NPR, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, CNN Today, The Economist, and The Guardian and I am routinely contacted for perspective on religion and politics from national and international news media. I have also written for The Washington Post, Time, NBC News, and the Religion News Service, among others. Along with my work on Christian nationalism, I also explores childhood disability and religion.
