For over 30 years I’ve led Commercial and Private Banking teams with lending expertise as a core competency. I believe clients often receive misguided advice about banking and the use of credit. Access to capital through credit facilities is an underappreciated, powerful wealth creation tool if used responsibly.I grew up, so to speak, in the Commercial Bank. I got to work with many of Canada’s most successful business owners and entrepreneurs. They taught me the importance of thinking and playing the long game to sustain a competitive advantage. While I work in a large institution, I think like a business owner, taking personal ownership and accountability for the business. As business leaders we’re constantly presented with new ideas. Working within a large enterprise means constant pressure to deliver against evolving priorities. I’m known for being able to cut through the distractions and staying focused on what really matters and achieving priorities faster. Nothing motivates me more than being told something can’t be done. As a leader I believe trust is given versus earned. Trust and autonomy underpin strong working relationships and promote innovation and confidence to try things without fear of failure. I over-invest in hiring well so that I can trust my teams from the outset. I have a skill for being able to make complex things simple. It’s difficult to do but critical to helping people understand complex ideas. My wife calls me “Clarica” – I think it’s a compliment. While I focus on staying out front, you won’t find me putting the business at risk on big bets. I embrace bold and constant improvements - well planned and well executed. This makes it easier to communicate and manage change, while being more effective, faster, and less disruptive. On the personal side, I love my job, my teams, and the work we do for our clients. But I don’t live to work, I work to live. Nothing brings me more joy than skiing, golfing, cooking and especially travelling with my wife and four children. As Anthony Bourdain says, travel changes you. As you move through life and this world you leave marks behind. And in return, life – and travel – leaves marks on you. In my family’s book of “life rules”, everyone knows #5: never pass up an interesting opportunity. If you are an entrepreneur or a business owner and want to know more about how to use credit as a strategic tool and avoid unnecessary investment trade-offs, please feel free to reach out. I will put you in touch with a one of our exceptional private bankers.
