Built from the ground up a wellness unit to efficiently deliver services to low income older adults. Services included: falls prevention exercise and education, group exercise classes, health promotion behavior change initiatives, health literacy and wellness education.Designed and administered a comprehensive health assessment in three languages to evaluate health outcomes of over 200 clients participating in senior center activities. Constructed a database and analyzed data using Excel and Tableau 10.0. Used findings to re-tailor services and recruit participants into wellness programs while improving existing client referral systems for mental health and medical services.Implemented and facilitated six novel evidence based programs including the “Chronic Disease Self Management Program” which focuses on behavior change and skill building among older adults suffering from chronic conditions.Initiated a long-term collaboration with a researcher at the Clinical & Translational Science Center (CTSC) at Weill Cornell Medicine to conduct a community based research study investigating the relationship between continence promotion education and fall risk. As co-investigator of the study I was trained to conduct continence promotion seminars for older adults. Recruited participants, led seminars, assisted with study design, administered surveys, drafted grant proposals, and initiated follow up with 54 participants in the study.Designed and implemented a community-based version of “Music and Memory”, a personalized music therapy initiative in collaboration with Woodhull Hospital and the Fund for Health and Hospitals NYC. Screened participants for dementia and depression as inclusion criteria for entry into the program. Facilitated group classes where participants were routinely evaluated for level of engagement and alleviation of symptoms.

Overhauled laboratory protocol investigating the "Intestinal Microbiome of Foreign Students" study in Dr. Lee Riley's lab at UC Berkeley. Designed and tested new primers from a GFP plasmid which were used to normalize across qPCR experiments. Investigated relative genetic expression of key organisms in stool samples from volunteers over time as markers for change in the microbiome of those volunteers using qPCR.Analyzed qPCR data and developed heat maps using R open source software plotting fold change in target organism expression with percent change in BMI of each volunteer over time. Wrote a pilot grant for NIH funding to expand the study and recruit more volunteers to participate.

MCB Bio 1AL (Biology 1 laboratory) with Dr. Meighan -Spring 2013 semesterFacilitated laboratory lectures and activities including: bioinformatics, dissection, PCR, thin layer chromatography, genetics, culture, etc. for three hours bi-weekly to 60+ students. MCB 62 (Drugs and the Brain) with Dr. Presti -Fall 2013 semesterGuided three discussion sections with 30 students each regarding how drugs interact with the biochemistry of the brain while giving historical and cultural context for the use of these drugs using an ethno-pharmacological perspective. Designed and lead three debates concerning drug policy in the United States which encouraged students to research and think outside the box when confronted with political controversy. MCB 15 (Current topics in the Biological Sciences) with Dr. Matsui -Spring 2014 semester Developed, in coordination with the course design team, curriculum for the course. Facilitated two discussion sections/week (60 students total), persuading students to take seriously the importance of science literacy and how it is communicated to the public. Developed three debates carried out by students on key topics including GM foods, hydraulic fracturing for natural gas, and Vaccine hesitancy.Constructed a final project which included the design and implementation of three surveys including the aggregation and analysis of survey responses. Students then used the data to create a brochure which would educate the public regarding common misconceptions about science revealed to the students through the survey data.Presented three 1 hour lectures to the full class of 130 students concerning pressing public health topics.

Wrote a grant proposal which was funded by the Ambassador's special self-help fund (ASSHF) of the U.S. embassy for more than $17,000 to build a self-boarding girls hostel at the secondary school of Misuku. The hostel was completed and now safely houses 60 girls each term. Managed the budget, coordinated with community leaders in the procurement of materials, and established a labor committee to oversee construction of the hostel. Authored 3 grant proposals which were funded through Appropriate Projects, a water charity organization, for $1,500 to build six new protected springs and maintain ten existing protected springs throughout the Misuku catchment area. Taught Life skills and HIV/AIDS education as well as physical science to more than 175 secondary school students for three terms. Participated in weekly growth monitoring, vaccination, de-worming, and supplemental feeding programs at the Misuku health center as well as outreach clinics in the Misuku catchment area. Facilitated two computer training seminars at local teacher development centers in the Chitipa and Karonga districts. Each seminar lasted one week training 28 community leaders in basic computer literacy including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Coordinated at the district level with two IT specialists to distribute Ubuntu open source software to all major district offices in Chitipa in order to prevent the spread of malicious computer viruses. Recorded, directed, edited, and copyrighted a church choir music video DVD for the Misuku CCAP church as an income generating activity. Negotiated the creation of a church based organization through the district assembly of Chitipa. Income generated by the group was used to support orphans within the church with school fees and uniforms. Led large assembly discussions during outreach clinics on topics concerning HIV/AIDS and STD/STI prevention using visual aids and video supplementation from the DVD series "Scenarios from Africa".
