For two summers, I worked as a research assistant at the Saban Research Institute Laboratory affiliated with the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the University of Southern California. In the microbiology lab, I gained knowledge in genetic identification and gene studies. I repeatedly performed the Western Blot protein detection method as well as tissue sample preparation for viewing under a microscope. I duplicated DNA using the polymerase chain reaction, cut them by mixing in restriction enzymes using a micropipette, separated the pieces using gel electrophoresis, and then photographed the results in a dark room. I worked on a project that studied the role of the PTHrP gene in fetal monkey lungs; my findings were published and I coauthored an article in the European Respiratory Journal titled, “Overexpression of TGF-beta1 in fetal monkey lung results in Prenatal Pulmonary Fibrosis.”
