About Andrew Deines
I am an ecologist who specializes in compiling messy data into understandable patterns in community change related to environmental conditions. My current interests and activates involve how ecological data supports sustainability, including sustainability and financial reporting and emerging issues such as concerns about 6PPD. I gather data from available sources: web scraping, public databases, published literature, remote sensing, proprietary data sets, and new sampling. From these complicated data I apply integrated analyses and create simple visual interpretations supported by statistical modeling. My experiences range from the banks of the Kafue River in Zambia to the Gulf of Mexico and the California Bight, as well as products at the global scale.
Listed skills include Ecological And Fisheries Modeling, Conservation Genetics, Bio Economics, Environmental Policy, and 19 others.

Senior Scientist
As senior scientist I perform data analysis and modeling in a variety of contexts ranging from DNA to ecosystems, including ecological risk assessment, damage assessment, trend analysis, and prediction to understand linkages and changes in ecological systems.
Postdoctoral Research Scientist
Global freshwater fisheries are far more important to economies and nutrition than is apparent from past and current policies governing their sustainable management. Meanwhile, introduced species are having wide-ranging effects, positive and negative, on freshwater fisheries and the ecosystems that support them. My post-doctoral research aimed to develop better understandings of these coupled human and natural systems to bolster sustainable resources. My projects included developing models of global inland fisheries production to better estimate the contribution of these under-described fisheries to the local and global economies.
Phd Candidate, Biological Sciences
In my multi-disciplinary research I reached across national boundaries to incorporate ecology, genetics and socio-economics to explore the impact of freshwater fish invasions on the sustainability of subsistence fisheries. Nile tilapias have been introduced world-wide for aquaculture, and has escaped to form feral populations in over 100 countries with virtually unknown, but possibly substantial, ecological impacts. Tilapia invasion may reduce the diversity of native fish and alter ecosystem dynamics through hybridization, competition and habitat alteration. I investigated these ecological mechanisms in Zambia as a case study to understand large scale and long term changes in fisheries sustainability by integrating poverty reduction and natural living resource management.
Volunteer
I lived and worked in Kapapa, a rural African farming village on the edge of the Lukangaba protected forest, working with locals to teach sustainable farming and forestry practices. My goal was to increase livelihoods by increasing the productivity of farmlands, demonstrating sustainable forestry practice, and introducing alternative income generating activities, like beekeeping and fish farming, as an alternative to charcoal burning.
