I was one of four leaders taking a contingent of Boy Scouts from the Overland Trails Council in Nebraska to Washington, D.C. for a few days and then on to the Summit Bechtel Reserve from July 19 to July 28, 2017 for the 2017 National Jamboree."In 2009, the BSA purchased 10,600 acres of property adjacent to West Virginia’s New River Gorge National River area in order to create the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. The Summit is the new home of achievement, adventure, and innovation in Scouting. With world-class facilities and a focus on outdoor action sports, the Summit welcomed Scouts to a whole new jamboree experience in summer 2013. Seasonal, Summer work as a general laborer roguing & detasseling.In agriculture, roguing refers to the act of identifying and removing plants with undesirable characteristics from agricultural fields. Rogues are removed from the fields to preserve the quality of the crop being grown. That is, the plants being removed may be diseased, be of an unwanted variety, or undesirable for other reasons. For example, to ensure that the crop retains its integrity with regards to certain physical attributes, such as color and shape, individual plants that exhibit differing traits are removed. Roguing is particularly important when growing seed crops to prevent plants with undesirable characteristics from propagating into subsequent generations.Detasseling is the process of removing the top part of a corn plant, the tassel, so that the plant cannot pollinate itself. The task of pollination is done by another type of corn grown for that sole purpose. The result is a superior breed of corn that has genetic characteristics of both the pollinating and detasseled corn plants. Removing tassels from corn plants is actually the simplest part of a very complex business involving the genetics of seed corn.
