Profile bio

About Andrew Hanlon

With over a decade of experience dedicated to solving some of the universe’s biggest questions, I have picked up a diverse skill set that can translate to many different problem-solving- and technical-based jobs. As a postdoctoral researcher in theoretical physics, my goal has been to continuously push the bounds of our understanding of the world at the deepest levels by delivering novel solutions to the challenges found on the frontier of nuclear and particle physics. Some of these methods involve mathematical modeling, efficient software development, data analysis, and much more. My research has focused on a numerical technique for solving the equations of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) — known as Lattice QCD — which govern the inner workings of atomic nuclei and a whole slew of more esoteric particles. Lattice QCD is a very computationally-demanding method, requiring large computational resources coupled with efficient numerical algorithms. Hence, this work has given me expertise in high-performance computing via supercomputers equipped with GPUs and many CPU cores. At Carnegie Mellon University, my current role involves spearheading the development of Lattice QCD software tailored for GPU architectures found in most new supercomputers today. This work is crucial for performing high-fidelity simulations that are vital to our understanding of QCD. By optimizing efficient algorithms and leveraging these highly-parallel machines, much about the underlying nature of our world can be revealed.

Listed skills include Programming, Php, Web Development, C#, and 15 others.

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Current

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States

My work focuses on the development of lattice QCD software that runs on GPUs. To perform calculations in lattice QCD, we make sure to use state-of-the-art algorithms for efficiently utilizing the available computing resources. Further, many of the fastest machines in the world these days come equipped with several GPU nodes which are natural architectures.

Nov 2023 - Present

Postdoctoral Research Associate

My current work has incorporated physics related to the Electron-Ion Collider, which is currently under construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory. This includes investigating the internal structure of the nucleon from first principles. Of particular interest is the recently developed formalism for calculating parton distribution functions in lattice.

Nov 2020 - Nov 2023

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Mainz, Germany

Highlights of my work during this time include the calculation of several three-pion finite-volume excited-state energies in various momentum frames for the first time, and the discovery of large discretization errors for baryon-baryon systems. These results were published in high-impact journals and several conference proceedings.

Oct 2017 - Oct 2020

Graduate Student Researcher

Pittsburgh, PA

My Ph.D. research focused on Kπ scattering and the implementation of tetraquark interpolating operators with lattice QCD. Using the so-called Lüscher method, we could extract information about infinite-volume resonances (i.e. the K*(892)) from finite-volume Kπ energies. Additionally, by including tetraquark operators, we found extra finite-volume energies.

Apr 2014 - Sep 2017

Undergraduate Research Assistant

We studied the effects of applying residual symmetries to the neutrino mass matrix, which resulted in predictions for the Dirac CP phase, the atmospheric mixing angle, and the Jarlskog invariant in the neutrino sector. In addition, we determined the conditions that would allow experiments to measure the mass hierarchy and/or the octant of the atmospheric.
