As Hurricane Sandy clearly showed, we are living in an age of unprecedented violent change. It is an era in which three highly disruptive crises – global economic instability, climate change, and peak everything – are converging insidiously to shred the fabric of society.The coming shocks: international financial collapse, epic flood and drought, energy and natural resource shortages, and extreme price spikes are likely to be catastrophic if we do not prepare. The New York City Bioregion – an area covering parts of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania – is especially vulnerable to these disruptive changes.Our Bright Green Future will re-create self-sufficiency for the New York City Bioregion, with a mutually supportive connection to the surrounding New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut farms, fisheries, communities and the bounty of preserved wetlands, forests, mountains, bays, and the sea.The questions before us are:1. How can the New York City metropolitan area community develop a food security plan to feed itself from farms within 100 miles of the Battery?2. Andrew was the the instructor for pilot BOCES Youthbuild program at the Hudson River Maritime Center’s Riverport WoodenBoat School. He also teaches first adult education classes at the Wooden Boat School, Carving for Marine and Home Applications. The Youthbuild program introduced students to the elements of woodworking, tool sharpening and maintenance, drafting, lay out, cutting lists, wood preparation, joinery and steam and lamination bending. The students will build a tool box using boat building techniques, work in the woods and at a sawmill, assisted with the restoration of Cleawater and the Woody Guthrie. The Vermont Sail Freight Project originated out of Eric's Andrus' farm’s commitment to resilient food systems. "Producing food sustainably is not enough. The other half is sustainable transport of goods to market and equitable exchange. A good portion of the damage conventional agriculture does to society and the environment is through our overblown, corporation-dominated distribution systems." The idea of a small, producer-owned craft sailing goods to market, perhaps even a distant market, is an alternative to this system, and one which has served our region well in the past.

Baykeeper's mission is to preserve, protect, and restore the Hudson-Raritan (NY/NJ Harbor) Estuary and its watersheds. I was the Baykeeper and Executive Director from 1989 to 2008. Duties included but were not limited to: patrolling the Bays of New York Harbor aboard the Baykeeper boat, managing the staff, finances and fund raising, producing reports and policy positions, participating in legal actions against polluters, working with students at the Rutgers Law School Environmental law clinic, testified before state and national legislative committees, participated in the transition of two NJ Governors, and was the recipient of several awards from local, regional, and international organizations. In the early 1990's helped to found the Alliance of River, Sound, and Baykeepers that in 1999 became the Waterkeeper Alliance.
