Cracking Area Mechanical Maintenance Engineer •Responsibility for optimising plant reliability, safety and efficiency in the Cracking asset (10 units including FCCU and HF alkylation units) through short to medium term engineering support, including:•providing day to day engineering support to the asset;•analysing plant breakdowns and recommending actions for improved performance including operation and equipment specification;•identifying and investigating uneconomic equipment and developing and implementing solutions for continuous improvement;•identifying capital investment improvements, engaging and assisting projects team and acting as technical approval;•conducting investigations into equipment failures causing safety or environmental incidents;•designing and controlling mechanical changes through management of change procedure;•developing and implementing refinery wide engineering standards and equipment maintenance strategies;•enforcing standards and coaching operations and maintenance teams to increase technical knowledge and correct use of site procedures.

A three month assignment advising the project team at Petit Couronne refinery near Rouen in France, reviewing the atmospheric storage tank major inspection and maintenance programme. The review included: analysing the complete project process including objectives, scope, planning and execution; contacting other sites within the group to compare programmes; reviewing contract strategy and contractor control; project team organisation and interaction with the wider refinery.

I spent five months on various engineering projects throughout the refinery. This included:Equipment failure investigations and actions arising from HAZOP studies; Engineering support for a planned maintenance shut-down.

I took a placement as part of a project team in the design and procurement of a research pilot plant into a new process technology.I developed engineering specifications and provided technical assistance during contractor engagement. I was involved in HAZOP reviews, estimate reviews, value engineering and budget risk analysis.I reviewed designs from contractors to ensure compliance with relevant site requirements and industry standards.

I project managed a section of a major planned maintenance shut-down through select, define and execute phases of the capital value process. This was approximately 12,000 man-hours of work and a budget of £1 million. My role included project management, planning, contract management and execution leadershipI came in under budget and within a time-scale that caused no loss of production.

I took a number of graduate placements within Coryton Oil Refinery to gain an understanding of various refinery functions and systems.
