About Andrew Carr

Andrew is an architect who combines practice with teaching and writing. In 2024 he founded tempo - a new architecture practice evolving from his 25 years of experience in practice and his parallel interests in time and temporality in architecture.Since 2003 he has worked with Brady Mallalieu Architects - during Angela Brady’s tenure as President of the RIBA - and continues to collaborate with them on a number of projects alongside his work with tempo. He has served a range of clients from larger organisations, such as Islington Council, Peabody, Pocket, Ballymore, Igloo and the Murphy Group, through to private individuals and community groups like Green Skibbereen. Andrew has led, from inception to completion, multiple award winning projects, including: Underwood Road for Peabody, the Phoenix Heights residential development at Canary Wharf on the Isle of Dogs, London, and Brickworks - a 1,000 sq. community centre with new social housing for Islington Council which was developed through a series of design workshops with the local community and stakeholders. Most recently he has overseen the renovation and extension of two listed buildings in central London. With Angela and Robin he exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts Annual Summer Show in Piccadilly in 2018.Prior to Brady Mallalieu he developed international experience working with acclaimed bio-climatic architect Ken Yeang in Malaysia and collaborated with the Design Research Unit at the Welsh School of Architecture. He combines practice with academic activity: He is a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Westminster, taught at the Welsh School of Architecture as a design tutor, visiting critic, technical consultant and internal examiner for over ten years and has since taught at Newcastle University and the London School of Architecture. In 2022 he was runner up in the Architecture Foundation's Architecture Writing Prize. He has published papers in international, peer-reviewed journals on architectural matters; developing his longstanding research interests in the uses of time in architecture, often through design based research and the interpretation of the work of contemporary architects, such as Níall McLaughlin, Dow Jones and Brady Mallalieu Architects. He has been a Mentor on the Open-City Accelerate! programme and a shortlister for the RIBA Awards

Listed skills include Architectural Design, Urban Design, Architecture, Vectorworks, and 21 others.
