POLICY ADVISOR AND WRITER – Following sudden changes to the fatigue levels from my disability, I can now only work part-time - on Boards and Committees – plus advising and writing on policy development. I specialise in the supply and service sectors (e.g. transport, energy, health), where my scientific and marketing knowledge allows for an understanding of the problems of suppliers, my knowledge of government allows for more effective use of governance systems and policy development, while wide experience of consumers (in particular, disadvantaged consumers) gives an insight into the needs and choices of end-users. My experience covers: - research (both primary and secondary) and evaluation – its quality and relevance, literature reviews and interrogating datasets) - then presenting the findings in an interesting and accessible way.- advising on new policies, or changes to policy and strategy - clarifying, simplifying, finding options, their logic and how they link to other policies - evaluating how acceptable they are likely to be.- advocacy: presenting a persuasive and logical case - backed up by practical considerations and as much research/data as possible. Overall, my approach is to isolate the problem and be both logical and imaginative about finding good and realistic solutions. I make use of my experience in markets (gained from Saatchi & Saatchi et al), research (gained from London and Cambridge Universities), and policy and strategy development (from working in government agencies and the NHS). Underlying this is an appreciation of people’s expectations, from the regular consumer (or patient) to the specific needs of the disadvantaged and disabled.
