    U.S. Forest Service Jun 2017 - Sep 2017
    Burns, Or.
Description: For the 2018 summer, I was member of the Burns Helitack Crew located at the Burns Municipal Airport. From here, we would get flown by helicopter into the wilderness and other remote areas to suppress wildfires. Other responsibilities of this job were constructing helicopter weight load manifests, unloading and loading gear off an idling helicopter, and giving helicopter briefings to passengers. As an Incident Commander on a small fire, you would fill out a fire incident report. In this report you include latitude and longitude coordinates and elevation recorded from your Garmin GPS, the terrain, slope, aspect, vegetation, and other terrain characteristics. If assigned to a large fire, myself or another crew member could expect to be the Aviation Radio Operator. As a radio operator you are stationed in the radio box at the helibase and inform aviation on the fire of weather conditions, new missions, and aerial hazards. When a helicopter returns to the base I direct them were to land as well as record their flight hours. Skills:Analyzed aerial hazard maps, proficient with the Advenza PDF Maps mobile application, assisting in reconnaissance and mapping missions from a helicopter.

    Wildland Firefighter (Handcrew)
    U.S. Forest Service Jun 2014 - Sep 2016
    Hines, Or
Description:For three consecutive summers I was a member of a 20 person hand crew for the Burns Interagency Fire Zone located in Eastern Oregon. While on the handcrew, I traveled the Pacific Northwest suppressing wildfires using a variety of techniques. Some of these techniques included building fire line with and hand tools and ignited fires for organized firing operations. Fire operations are when controlled fires are intentionally lit from a controlled point in front of the wildfire fire to remove vegetation and slow the main fires progress. I assisted in navigating crew members to the fires using field maps, and the township and range. If there was no location provided, triangulation using the smoke column and geographic features, was used to get a general location and distance for the fires. Skills:Became skilled at walking in steep rugged terrain with 40 or pounds of weight, developed a very flexible work schedule where I was expected to work early mornings and late nights with work weeks reaching over 80 hours a week, taking weather from a belt weather kit as well as analyzing weather trends and patterns.
