Research Scientist And R&D Manager
CurrentI am a co-founder and researcher at Sea4Us, where I am coordinating the R&D team. We are focused on the discovery and development of new pharmaceutical drugs, based on core expertise in ion channels and marine biology. Our compounds, derived from marine organisms, are screened against a number of molecular targets (ion channels), which are involved in several pathologies. We aim at identifying novel pharmaceutical drugs for several unmet clinical needs.

Phd Student
PhD in molecular biophysics focused on novel aspects of metabolism in neuronal excitability. By applying electrophysiology patch clamp techniques - whole-cell voltage-clamp and single-channel patch clamp recordings -, I have studied the influence of the feeding cycle (feeding vs fasting periods) over the voltage-activated sodium, potassium, and calcium currents of rat hippocampal CA1 neurons. The results obtained in my PhD provided new insights into the implications of the feeding cycle upon the neuronal membrane composition, organization and excitability, reinforcing the involvement of the hippocampus on the regulation of energy homeostasis.

Molecular biophysical studies aimed at studying the role of lipid rafts upon the regulation of plasma membrane by hydrogen peroxide in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Functional differences between cholesterol (major sterol in mammalian plasma membrane), ergosterol (main sterol in yeast plasma membrane) and zymosterol, a precursor of both sterols. Handling of yeast cell culture and preparation of model systems (liposomes) labeled with several probes sensitive to different lipid domains. Application of steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic fluorescence techniques (excitation and emission spectra; anisotropy; FRET "Forster resonance energy transfer"; fluorescence lifetime) and fluorescence microscopy (confocal microscopy).
