I am Professor of Wetland Ecology in the Department of Environmental Science and Technology at the University of Maryland in College Park. I received my Ph.D. in Botany from Louisiana State University in 1996, and hold B.S. degrees in Biology and Engineering from Tufts University. My research program focuses on the vegetation of natural and restored wetlands and how it is affected by environmental and biotic factors such as microbial communities, hydrology, nutrients, salinity, and invasive species. Major research projects have dealt with the effects of global change (specifically sea level rise, atmospheric warming, and eutrophication) on the plant ecology of coastal wetlands and factors controlling the establishment of vegetation in wetland restoration projects. I have published more than 40 refereed journal articles and book chapters, co-edited two books, and given over 100 invited and contributed scientific presentations. I teach graduate and undergraduate courses on wetland ecology and restoration and serve as Director of Undergraduate Programs for my department. Previously I was President of the Society of Wetland Scientists, an international organization of more than 3,000 members.

Conducted research related to the plant community dynamics of coastal wetlands. Presented research findings at departmental seminars and professional meetings. Developed and gave lectures for biology laboratory courses, covering topics including community ecology, plant water potential, photosynthesis, population genetics, enzyme kinetics, meiosis/mitosis, data analysis, and basic laboratory techniques. Prepared and graded quizzes and exams and tutored students.

Described flora and fauna of terrestrial, wetland, and aquatic systems, performed quantitative biological surveys, prepared ecological risk and impact assessments, and evaluated ecological effects of cleanup alternatives at hazardous waste sites. Conducted wetland delineation and mitigation. Wrote proposals and reports, managed large projects, and made presentations at public meetings. Administrative duties as acting Manager for the Department of Applied Ecology included coordinating project staffing needs, managing departmental budgets, and providing personnel functions.
