At LGC, my main task is to produce a wide range of clean and engaging digital media marketing copy – including science articles, video scripts, email newsletters, social media posts, brochures, and technical articles. Despite not possessing a background in science, I was quick to grasp the key scientific and commercial concepts behind all of the LGC brands, and use that knowledge daily to write compelling content for a highly science-literate audience.

I spent a highly productive 14 months writing original content for Kooth, the digital mental health services provider for the NHS and others. I wrote extensively on mental health during the coronavirus pandemic, and much more - including running, mindfulness, football, parenting, Colonial History, Postnatal Depression and Transgender Issues. I also contributed a series of interviews on building personal resilience - interviewing authors, mind coaches, community activists and a former England footballer about how we can all learn, and come back stronger, from adversity.

I created theshit50s.org to write honestly and humorously about being a 50-something man in the 2020s - focusing particularly on mental health, running, cycling and, of course, Covid-19! I'm very proud of the site as it taught me lots of new tricks - including Wordpress, Photoshop and Illustrator - while rediscovering the feature writing chops I'd developed on newspapers. I helped this criminal justice charity set up a new, streamlined website to boost its profile and make it easier for stakeholders to engage. I revamped the website structure and created new Wordpress pages, adding pictures and impactful copy. Site is now live!

Beginning as a Trainee News and Sports Reporter, I contributed a wide range of copy, including sports, court and crime reports, local politics and council news, lifestyle and news features as well as advertorials. Over my time at the newspaper, I contributed hundreds of front-page and page-lead articles on the biggest stories of the day. Promoted to the News Desk as Deputy News Editor, I supervised the News Diary and organised a team of 15 reporters and eight sub-editors in producing two weekly newspapers and a pull-out TV and lifestyle magazine to deadline. I also took responsibility for the entire news operation when the News Editor was away or covering for the Group Editor. I also played a key role in the launch of Seven, the group’s weekly magazine, where I took principal responsibility for generating feature ideas, supervised picture and copy production to deadline and ensured a reliable supply of interesting pictures and articles.

Working in a team of two, I wrote the full range of local newspaper stories, and frequent advertorials, for a seven-edition free newspaper that often required a different front-page story for each location.
