About Andy Dodds
Andy Dodds is an Associate Principal in Arup’s Auckland Office and Geotechnical Leader for Arup New Zealand. With over 24 years of experience in geotechnical, earthquake and civil engineering, Andy has worked on a broad range of projects including road, rail, aviation, maritime, land development, education, hotel and leisure, and arts and culture accomplishments. Most recently, Andy has been the lead geotechnical design engineer for the $1billion replacement of the Gerald Desmond Bridge at the Port of Long Beach in California. Located in close proximity to major faults and with liquefiable ground conditions, the new 600m long, 6-lane signature cable-stayed bridge features tip-grouted pile foundations to maximize axial efficiency and employs lightweight cellular concrete construction for retaining structures to minimize ground and earthquake loading.Other samples of Andy’s project experience include the new airport in Mexico City to be constructed on soft clay, the high speed rail project through the San Gabriel Mountains and San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, the Guggenheim Museum in Abu Dhabi, retaining structures in the rugged and elevated terrain of the American Rockies, underground railway structures in London and Los Angeles, wharf structures at ports in Los Angeles, Sydney and Fiji, coastal and commercial development in Malaysia and New York, and highway projects in New Mexico and New Zealand. Working on a variety of large and small projects and living around the world, Andy has gained excellent design and construction experience in a diverse range of environments and conditions. He applies this experience in leading and managing projects and teams, having served as geotechnical team leader in Arup’s Los Angeles Office for the previous six years.
