Everything from changing light bulbs to handling annual IT budget planning. The company went through a couple name changes and one sale. In 1988, I started working for Forward Data Products/Forpay Payroll Services/Academy Systems. Technically, my services were used by Forward Data Products as a hardware technician. I repaired printers, terminals, and General Automation mini computers. Sometimes the repairs were at the component level, which required replacing chips on the circuit boards. Everything was connected by serial data cables, frequently through the customer's cat 2/3 phone blocks. I've pulled cable, soldered rs232, and punched blocks. As the company grew, the owner consolidated into "Payday of America, LLC.". We also started using PCs, rather than terminals. I installed a peer-to-peer network, which quickly transformed into client/server, as our recognition of the many benefits became apparent. I ran a cat5 network, installed a server, switched to an HP 9000 for payroll processing, created a fax pool, set up Internet connection with shared email. With the increase in payroll business, my roles transitioned into doing more data center management. This involved streamlining our printing, packaging, shipping of payrolls for other companies. Bank ACH transmissions became more relevant. We developed a PC product where customers could manage their payroll in-house and transmit to us for processing. I was installation and support. Modules were programmed to interface with Jason, then Stromberg, time keeping systems. I trained and certified in the time and attendance systems. Payday of America, LLC was purchased by Union Central Insurance Co. Union Central had aggressive growth plans and offered me a choice between Data Center management and IT manager. I elected IT.
