BSc DEng CEng FCIBSE PPCIBSEPast Professor of Systems in Built Environment at LSBU,now working with my Co-directors at ICAX to manufacture and bring advanced heat pumps to the mass market. A passionate engineer who believes that the best test of a good idea is to build it for real, he established and ran the award-winning innovative environmental engineering practice Fulcrum Consulting (now Mott MacDonald) for 25 years as Director of Research to Reality producing many groundbreaking buildings. Founding chair of the UKGBC technical and policy committees, a long-term member of the Modern Built Environment Knowledge Transfer Network steering group elected president of CIBSE in 2011. Awarded an honorary doctorate of engineering by Herriot Watt University 2012 he moved into academia. Continuing the 'build to prove it' approach at LSBU he now occupies a building heated by aquifer-sourced high-temperature heat pumps on an ambient loop as part of a 'Balanced Energy Network' demonstrating low carbon neighbourhood solutions for existing buildings. I have spent my life driving technical leadership in the built environment as a consultant and academic. I am fascinated by the necessary process and challenges of innovation to drive our built environment institutions harder and faster to respond to the challenge of climate change with practical solutions. Having been responsible for the design of notable very low-energy buildings my research at London South University has dealt with decarbonising our existing building stock at scale developing integrated heat pump solutions that can be rapidly implemented.
