I'm working with teams to accelerate the delivery of working software. This takes the form of technical coaching of dev skills within teams, including TDD, mob/ensemble programming, story slicing, continuous delivery and SRE. I also work across teams, identifying bottlenecks to delivery and helping leadership to organise teams for delivery. Outside of direct work with teams and individuals, I work to promote modern software engineering principles and values in the organisation as a means of accelerating business outcomes and helping everyone to feel more fulfilled in the work they do.

I led a team of engineers developing AWS and Kubernetes-based microservices. The services provide a web platform used by product teams to accelerate their delivery of features on sites such as www.rentalcars.com. During my time as Engineering Manager, we developed a vision for the team and our services and actively worked towards that vision. We adopted observability standards, mob programming, continuous deployment and an SRE approach to our services. This improved our quality, reduced toil and rework, and allowed the team to all but eliminate painful live issues.

I provide consultancy services to commercial partners in the areas of Lean/Agile delivery, software development and SREFor example, in 2019 I provided software development services to a large e-commerce company. This included NodeJS/Java software design and development for a high availability web platform environment using AWS and Kubernetes.

Leading teams working in a DSDM project environment, on projects building technology to aid in the automated authoring and publishing of UK/EU legislation and related information. Other responsibilities included providing live support to software already in production. Although projects had clearly defined timelines, development of the internal authoring product followed a Devops model.Similar daily responsibilities to my last role but with a more official remit to help improve Agile practices and lead technology decisions. I was acting up in this role for a year before my appointment.

Daily responsibilities include designing and coding solutions, sharing best practice and communicating effectively with BAs, testers, users and project managers.Most recently I have been the lead developer on a project to create a new solution for authoring and publishing new legislation content onto Westlaw UK, using XML, Spring Boot and AngularJS. Once again this has involved running Sprint meetings and retrospectives, organising the backlog, negotiating scope changes and design decisions with stakeholders and generally clearing obstacles out of the way of the other developers on the project.As of June 2015, I am torn between a love of coding and technical problem solving and a fascination with how teams work and how to make them work better and happier.

During this period, we redeveloped our principal software product, transitioning from a C++ desktop app to an enterprise solution using Java, Spring and GWT.I ran the development team, implementing Agile development practices based on a Scrum approach. We were focussed on continuous delivery of software and regular, effective communication both internally and with customers. Part of my team was based in Minsk, so effective communication was challenging. However, we managed to maintain a cohesive dynamic by, amongst other things, remaining connected throughout the day via IM.My daily responsibilities remained designing algorithms, coding, testing and providing front line support, but now extended to planning sprint meetings and retrospectives, organising the backlog and working with the CTO to plan and estimate new projects.

I was responsible for designing/developing image processing algorithms and implementing them in our proprietary C++ app. Daily duties ranged from dealing with customers, discussing the capabilities of the software and providing front line support, to planning and building software features in new areas.

Daily responsibilities included learning about and discussing inventions in myriad technical fields, writing letters arguing over the patentability of inventions with examiners and drafting new patent applications. I spent a great deal of time working on software inventions, particularly image processing algorithms, but also worked on landfill walls, lithography, safety syringes, shopping trolley wheels and clever mattresses.

Supporting large, high capacity price generation system for complex equity derivatives. Responsibilities included managing roll-out of software, crisis management and training other staff.
