Profile bio

About Andy Hsu

Hi there! I am a senior at the University of Texas at Austin pursuing a major in Aerospace Engineering with a minor in Computer Science. I spent the summer of 2022 interning at FanDuel, working on the data engineering team and improving multiple data pipelines. I have also spent multiple semesters interning at Jet Propulsion Laboratory, developing and optimizing simulations that will predict the topography of Europa (a moon of Jupiter) prior to the 2030 arrival of a corresponding NASA mission (Europa Clipper).Additionally, I was a co-lead of a team in the Texas Rocket Engineering Lab (TREL), developing test plans and designing/building a test stand to test the fluid components of the rocket. I was also able to use my Python experience to host coding tutorials for the lab, as well as develop an interactive GUI application that quickly visualizes test data and significantly reduces test turnaround time.I am interested in data-driven decision-making and would love to apply my diverse array of experiences to an opportunity in data analytics or data science. In my free time, I developed a space-themed game in JAVA, modeling the effects of gravity on a hypothetical golf ball. I am passionate about baseball (go San Francisco Giants!), playing percussion, and biking around Austin!

Listed skills include Matlab, Python, Microsoft Office, Solidworks, and 2 others.

The Galileo mission, orbiting Jupiter from 1995 to 2003, suggested that Europa may have a subsurface ocean of water underneath its icy surface, which is particularly intriguing for the search for extraterrestrial life. This follow-up 2024 mission, known as Europa Clipper, will reach Europa in 2030.There is also the possibility of sending a lander to Europa (conveniently known as Europa Lander) to perform analyses on the lunar surface. However, scientists know that in certain locations on Earth such as Mount Kilimanjaro, blade-like ice structures known as "penitentes" naturally form. These penitentes have been documented to grow to the scale of humans, which would be of great concern to the Europa Lander mission should it encounter them. Consequently, the million-dollar question is: If penitentes can form in certain conditions on Earth, can they form on Europa? The Ocean Worlds Lab team that I am a part of is trying to answer this question both computationally, through Monte Carlo simulations, and experimentally, through an apparatus built and operated in a facility at JPL. The results will also inform the Europa Clipper team of certain topological signatures that the satellite can try to detect should penitentes exist (or not exist) on the surface.
