Responsible for successful delivery, viability and integration of a capital investment programme in the longest running RHS garden, Wisley.The Royal Horticultural Society was founded in 1804 to become the world’s leading gardening charity by inspiring passion and excellence in the science, art and practice of horticulture. It aims to enrich everyone's life through plants, and make the UK a greener and more beautiful place through an elite force of gardeners, garden shows, public gardens and outreach programmes. The RHS provides evidence based horticultural advice and inspiration to the public and its 500k members. RHS Wisley strategic investment programme included: 1. The UK’s first dedicated scientific centre of excellence in public engagement with horticultural taxonomy, plant health and horticultural science. The centre, combined with an inspirational and educational visitor hub, engages gardeners with four key strategic themes: • Global knowledge bank on gardening and garden plants• Plant health in gardens• Gardening in a changing world• Plant science for all people, plants and the planetThe building houses a working herbarium with over 80,000 accessions, a science library, laboratories and molecular lab, restaurant, classrooms, events auditorium and exhibit space to inspire and nurture scientists and horticulturalists of the future. 2. Front of house building that welcome increasing number of visitors (currently over 1.2 million per year) to the gardens. It is the first and last place visitors encounter. The building includes, orientation, ticketing, a café, restaurant, retail and plant retail. 3. Wisley infrastructure, new offices, horticultural services yard, new propagation facilities and seven new garden areas.the programme created physical and social infrastructure to help inspire everyone to grow.This was a new role in the RHS that utilised skills and experience from virtually every aspect of my career.

NTBG is the only congressionally chartered botanic garden in the USA. It was established to enrich life through discovery, scientific research, conservation, and education by perpetuating the survival of plants, ecosystems, and cultural knowledge of tropical regions through five gardens. Whilst I had been working with NTBG since 2011, focusing on master planning, business, training and marketing, I was made Director of two south shore gardens in 2013 responsible for 86 staff, $4m operating budget and delivery of vitally needed multi million dollar capital investment in infrastructure and change in business practice program to grow visitor numbers, revenue and increase organisational resilience. Specifically we:• Reinvigorated donor engagement with foundations, trustees, the local community and industry.• Delivered:o New transport infrastructure: New busses, almost three miles of new roads and tram stopso A new way of workingo New trails and way finding signageo Interpretive experiences and exhibits e.g. a biodiversity trail that took visitors on a journey through 450 million years of plant evolution, o A new ADA accessible Visitor Centre, with ticketing, retail and café operations in one place All delivered on time and on budget.• Added new skillsets through training, and new operations and marketing management positions • Increased confidence yielding significant multi million dollar donations• Intensified community engagement through media and blockbuster events such as movie nights, fun runs, mother’s day and celebratory events.• Delivered training, change management, new operational procedures, a new look and feel, sales and market approach that reconnected the tourism industry.• Grew visitor numbers 26% in visitor numbers and revenue by 48% through operational changes, strategic marketing intervention and yield management.

Research Lead and one of six founding Board Members of South West Tourism Alliance. This Alliance was formed by industry representatives to maintain four essential tourism functions which were in jeopardy when South West Tourism was disbanded. We created a safe home for South West Tourism's Research archive and a way to ensure data was collected and shared collaboratively.

Board member of English Tourism Research and Intelligence Partnership (now ETRIP)To help develop a program designed to improved the state of tourism statistics at a National, Regional and Sub-regional level which included setting up the Tourism Intelligence Unit at the Office of National Statistics.

Understanding the Eden Effect... From the day the Eden Project opened in 2001, this research program was developed to sample the changing profile of visitors to the Eden Project and to develop indicators to illustrate the various social, economic and environmental impacts of the Eden Project on the local, regional and national environment. This role included managing multiple research projects (an average of 50 per year), and developing strategies to engage new and existing audiences and co-managing a larger team with the Strategic Marketing Director.

• Hawaii USA - working with the National Tropical Botanical Garden – consultant:o 2013 – managed non visitor research study to establish investment priorities and to inform marketing approaches to convert non-visitors to become visitors.o 2012 – three months working with the staff to research and develop a marketing investment program that produced 14% year on year growth in numbers and revenueo 2011 – development of a ‘2020 vision’ for the Southshore gardens and developed stronger engagement with trustees and staff o Evaluation of current visitor program, marketing and engagement approaches.• Seychelles - 2008 - Community engagement with environmental education This project helping the Department of the Environment develop a strategy for environmental education in the Seychelles• South Africa – 2006 - 2008 ambassadorial advocacy and evaluation research. This project focused on evaluating the long term effectiveness of the horticultural training college ‘Green Futures’ for young black unemployed South Africans. This work focused on how the training college positively changed the entire direction of the lives of those who attended this college.

Tate St Ives - Evaluation research consultant – developed with the team and ran visitor research program that sampled the changing visitor profile six times per year and reported to senior management team three times per year from 2003 to 2012. As well as the profiling work, other studies also included:- learning evaluation- focus group work for development of new products - public consultation - Economic Impact Studies- Projected economic impact work and consultation for Tate St Ives phase II
