Strong leadership is good for everyone in a school district. Principals and district administrators lead better under a skilled superintendent. Teachers teach better with a good principal at the helm of their school. Students learn at amazing levels when taught and inspired by great teachers. I have spent my entire 30 year career studying, practicing and growing in leadership. I've seen good models and poor ones. I've had amazing successes myself and also my share of failures. The one constant is that I have learned from every experience. In fact, it's the learning and growing that drives me.That's why I love leadership and I love leadership coaching. Every morning I ask myself, "How can I contribute to the growth and development of the people around me today?" At the end of the day I reflect, "How did you grow as a leader today and how did you help others grow?" Whatever I interact with I want to make better - whether that be a process, a system, a goal, or most importantly, the people who make those things happen. I am proud of the successes I have achieved thus far and look forward to many more!

SuperintendentLakeside Union School District Sep 2017 - Jul 2021Lakeside, CaI was hired as LUSD Superintendent at a time when the district was emerging from a period of significant turmoil. My first priority was, and continues to be, building healthy, trusting relationships with staff, families, and the Board of Trustees. Trust is the currency of leadership, and without it nothing else matters. Open communication, support and encouragement, lots of listening, and spending time with people all across the district helped to calm the waters and get us ready for the work ahead.Working with teachers, administrators, parents, community members, students, and the Board, I led the development of a district vision statement and graduate profile that describes the attributes we want all LUSD students to exhibit when they leave us. The profile has grounded all of our instructional work and has been a powerful unifying vision for teachers at all of our school sites. Building on that foundation I worked with Trustees to refine Board goals, then align the LCAP, school site plans, and staff evaluations to those goals. The result is a "through line" that unites district efforts from the boardroom to the classroom, and has driven improvements in student outcomes at every level.Since the COVID-related shutdowns of 2020 I have managed the competing interests of parents and staff while leading the development of hybrid in-person, distance learning, and home school options for our students. While this has been immensely challenging, I am proud that our district was one of the first to reopen in San Diego county in fall 2020 and that students have been served well by our amazing staff through the various options we have given them. -
Assistant SuperintendentLakeside Union School District Jul 2015 - Jun 2017Lakeside, CaAs Assistant Superintendent, my daily work was to make sure our 5,200 students had an outstanding K-8 experience and were set up for success when they move on to high school. That means our kids are excelling academically, growing socially, and have opportunities in arts, sciences, and languages to explore different curricular areas and find out what they love to do. The majority of my time was spent on two things: building instructional systems and supporting the growth and development of principals, teachers and district office staff. Our school district is not buildings, busses or books - it is people. The job of a leader, then, is to bring people together to build systems that make it easier to meet student needs, and invest in the ongoing growth of the adults who serve our students. In Lakeside I worked with principals, teachers, and district administrators to build a district-wide assessment system so teachers and students had the feedback they needed to plan targeted instruction for every child, and principals could monitor the effectiveness of instruction on their sites. I also worked with our principals and district administrators in a leadership PLC for their ongoing growth and development. I collaboratively planned professional learning for all district teachers to inspire and support their growth. I facilitated the development of the district's LCAP, which is California's yearly strategic planning process for school districts. I leveraged the LCAP to bring together district teachers, support staff, administrators, Board of Trustee members, parents and students to set goals for student achievement and strategies to meet those goals. In the absence of a full-time superintendent, I served as acting superintendent. In this capacity I worked with all district staff and the Board of Trustees to manage day-to-day district business and keep the district moving forward. -
PrincipalPoway Unified School District Jul 2007 - Jun 2015Principal at Valley Elementary School in the Poway Unified School District in north San Diego County.2015 ACSA Region 18 Elementary Principal of the Year (San Diego County). In eight years as principal of Valley Elementary our API increased 38 points to 841, the highest API score the school has ever earned. I am very proud of our teachers and students for their incredible focus and dedication to excellence!During my time as principal at Valley Elementary I focused my efforts on creating sustainable systems for instruction and day-to-day operations of the school. Beginning my first year I led the staff in the creation of a vision statement to guide our work. From there we researched and developed schoolwide systems for curriculum, instruction, assessment and intervention for struggling students. I practiced distributed leadership at Valley. One of my first actions when I arrived at the school was to form a teacher leadership team to help analyze student data and lead the instructional improvement effort. By the time I left, over two thirds of the teachers on staff had served in a leadership role, and teachers were the backbone of our ongoing improvement efforts. Our school received the Title 1 Academic Achievement Award in 2008 and 2009.I was honored to receive the Leadership in Biliteracy Award from the San Diego County Office of Education in 2009.Valley serves 750 students in grades K-5. Over half participate in the school's Dual Language program, which follows a 90/10 Spanish immersion model. The program has been called "a model dual language program" by leading researchers in the field. -
Director, Charter Schools DivisionLos Angeles Unified School District Nov 2005 - Jun 2007Los Angeles, CaDirected staff of the Charter Schools Division in LAUSD's central office. During this time my office had oversight of 103 charter schools serving approximately 40,000 students in the greater Los Angeles area, during a time of rapid charter school growth. LAUSD is the nation's second largest charter authorizer, and leads the country in the conversation about school choice and autonomy. As with many of the positions I have held in my career, this one involved examining all aspects of the department's work, taking it apart and putting it back together again - with the goal of improving the district's approval and oversight of innovative charter schools. Some of my accomplishments in the Charter Schools Division:- Led charter school leaders and district staff in a revision of the district's procedures for reviewing and recommending for approval new charter petitions. - Revised process for overseeing operating charter schools and providing feedback for improved performance.- Supervised district staff in the analysis of new and renewing charters, as well as in regular oversight of operating charter schools. - Made recommendations to Los Angeles Board of Education on approval of new and renewing charters and charter revocations. - Oversaw the opening of 22 new charter schools and the revocation of 2 failing charter schools.- Interacted regularly with charter school operators and advocates to support the development of successful charter schools. My time in the Charter Schools Division helped me to hone skills in policy development, collaboration with advocacy groups and interaction with school boards and the press. It was a valuable time for my leadership development at the district/policy level. -

During my time as principal, our school's API increased 153 points - growth that surpassed state and district yearly targets.Led the staff in converting the school from regular district-run campus to fully fiscally independent charter school; still functioning in this capacity. I am very proud that the foundation I helped lay had led to sustained success. School wide Title 1 program; 86% EL students. Students from predimamtly first generation immigrant families from El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico. Incredible staff, supportive parents and inspiring kids! My time at SMBCCS taught me a lot about school leadership and I carry many of those lessons with me to this day.
